Colin Mulvany's favorite photos of the year

These are a few of my favorite photos I've taken for the newspaper this past year. Some are pretty, some not so, but all, hopefully, had something to say about the community we live in. I'd like to thank all the subjects who graciously let me into their lives, if only for a moment...

News Happens

Spokane Fire Department firefighter Capt. Mike Rose faints during a public memorial service for fellow firefighter John Knighten who died on June 30, 2013, from a work-related cancer. Rose was a pallbearer tasked with helping move Knightenís casket from the back of a fire engine parked outside the Spokane Convention Center, July 8, 2013. Paramedics and emergency medical technicians who were attending the service quickly came to the aid of the veteran firefighter, including Brian Schaeffer, assistant fire chief, bending over Rose to the right.

The Mayfair Professional building bursts into flames during a three-alarm fire at Central Avenue and Mayfair Street, Friday, July 5, 2012. A dentist working in the office smelled smoke and called 911 shortly before 4 p.m. Responding firefighters had entered the building, but were forced to pull out when the blaze escalated.

The ladybird beetle, Hippodamia convergens, is a gardener’s best friend, eating perhaps its weight in aphids daily. Strict carnivores, they eat no leafy vegetation.
