The Lewis and Clark Tigers put three players high on the leaderboard and pretty much matched scores with two-time defending champion Bellarmine Prep on a blustery Tuesday at the State 4A girls golf tournament. The Lions, however, have a couple of more scoring options, with six qualifiers compared to the Tigers’ four. Still, it shapes up as an interesting chase for the championship entering today’s final round at MeadowWood.

As Chris Stokesbary proved last weekend, the Central Valley boys soccer team is peaking at the right time – and they’re doing it with style. First was the quarterfinal shootout victory over Emerald Ridge. Then, last Saturday, after the Bears overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second half, Stokesbary scored a minute into overtime – a header off a corner kick – to help the Bears beat Davis 3-2.

Shoe shopping isn’t something many teenage girls dread, but the University and Shadle Park softball teams have uncovered the exception to that rule. Part of the Titans’ and Highlanders’ preparations for the State 3A tournament Friday and Saturday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey: Buy new rubber cleats, as the metal ones they’ve worn on the dirt fields all season are not allowed on the RAC’s artificial surface.

One by one, the Mt. Spokane boys golf team has checked off its list of goals. The Wildcats exceeded their preseason goal of winning two tournaments by claiming five. They won the Greater Spokane League title for the first time in school history. They won the 3A district championship for the fourth straight year.

RICHLAND – Is seven enough? The Mead boys track team will find out next week at the State 4A track meet in Tacoma.

BOISE – Coeur d’Alene scored in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday and beat Lewiston 7-6 in the consolation championship of the 5A state tournament at Boise Hawks Memorial Stadium. Joe Roletto had two hits and drove in three runs and Sean Sutton added two RBIs for the Vikings.

MERIDIAN, Idaho – Madison Seaman made sure her final throw in a Coeur d’Alene uniform was the best of her high school career. Seaman notched a personal best and captured a state championship for the second consecutive day Saturday, winning the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 10 1/4 inches at the Idaho 5A track and field state championships at Rocky Mountain High School.

WENATCHEE – Mt. Spokane’s fairy-tale run in the State 3A boys soccer tournament came to a close Saturday afternoon after running into a buzz saw-like Eastmont team. Eastmont dominated the quarterfinal match for an impressive 8-0 victory at the Apple Bowl, ousting Mt. Spokane from the postseason for the second year in a row to set up a semifinal date with Mercer Island at 3 p.m. Friday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Central Valley tennis standout Leslie Ho is headed back to the state tournament – but that’s not what she’s most excited about. “Last year, there were no plaques in our display case at CV for tennis,” said Ho, who beat Mead’s Chelsea Motzer 6-3, 6-2 in the girls singles final on Saturday at the 4A regional tournament at CV to earn a fourth straight state berth.

When Central Valley senior Chris Stokesbary played club soccer as a 14-year-old, he was a spectator when it came time to work on corner kicks. He was in the middle of the action Saturday. When the lanky defender got his head on the ball a minute into overtime for his second goal, he gave the Bears a 3-2 win over Davis and CV’s first trip to the State 4A semifinals in school history.

Here’s one reason the Cheney boys soccer team is unbeaten this year: Cheney soccer coach Mark Kiver is always thinking ahead. Moments after the Blackhawks clinched a spot in the state semifinals Saturday afternoon, the players were reaching for a 10-gallon bucket of ice water.

Morgan Willson won two events Saturday to lead the Colfax girls to the title at the District 7 2B championships at Whitworth College. The Bulldogs finished with 163 points, followed by Reardan (116), Northwest Christian (108) and Lind-Ritzville (65).

RICHLAND – Megan Murphy never tried the triple jump last year as a freshman. She only attempted it this spring because North Central assistant coach Gabe Medrano encouraged her to do so.

There’s a reason why the Richland Bombers are a perennial state baseball title contender. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile. Gonzaga Prep paid for two second-inning errors that resulted in all of Richland’s runs and a 6-5 victory in a State 4A quarterfinal Saturday afternoon at Avista Field.

Just because two teams are guaranteed a trip to the state playoffs doesn’t mean that emotions won’t run high – especially among the fans. That was the case when the Shadle Park Highlanders faced the Kamiakin Braves Saturday at University High in the 3A regional softball tournament. The undefeated Braves won the game 8-2 to get the No. 1 seed to state. The Highlanders get the second seed.

Freshman Madi Naccarato hit two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning Saturday and Lakeside held on to beat Colville 7-5 in the 1A Bi-District championship in Colville. The win gave the Eagles the top seed to the state tournament, which will be held next Friday and Saturday in Richland.
