    Cleveland maybe, but not Philadelphia

A GRIP ON SPORTS For quite possibly the first time in my life, today I would rather live in Cleveland. At least there the major league baseball team battles through adversity and has an ownership that will spend a bit of money to help its team compete. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have trouble saying such things with a straight face. Read on.
  • Blanchette: Common sense keeps golf champ on course

Like a lot of enterprising business travelers, Kira Powell managed to sneak in a round of golf while on the road this week. Unlike any of them, she had to sneak her clubs – three of them, anyway – in with her science project.
  • CV girls tennis players bear down for regionals

It’s obvious how in tune Central Valley girls tennis standout Leslie Ho and teammates Samantha Block and Charlotte Schmitz are with one another. When separately asked to describe a moment that stood out this season, there was no mention of the Bears’ ascension in the Greater Spokane League the past few seasons.
  • Coeur d’Alene falls in first round of state baseball tournament

For the second year in a row, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings baseball team watched its 5A state title hopes vanish at the hands of the Mountain View Mavericks. After losing 4-3 last season in the first round, CdA fell 10-2 to Mountain View on Thursday night at Hawks Stadium in Boise.
  • Area soccer teams walked tightrope

Never a doubt. By the narrowest of margins, three Spokane-area boys soccer teams are alive and kicking going into Saturday’s state quarterfinals.

  • An odd look for college football

A GRIP ON SPORTS College football in August. A good thing or bad thing? Discus among yourselves. I'm still trying to figure out if Larry Bernandez was actually in Felix's uniform last night. Read on.
  • CdA thrower Seaman rises above sorrow

Coeur d’Alene High senior Madison Seaman still hears her father cheering for her. Six months ago, Joe Seaman took his own life. The reasons why will forever remain a mystery, but one thing is for sure – the daughter’s love for her father remains intact.
  • Cheney defeats Othello in double OT at state

It was a tough-luck night, but the Cheney soccer team was more than tough enough to overcome it. After giving up a tying goal late in regulation, the Blackhawks scored with 2 minutes left in overtime to defeat Othello 2-1 in a first-round State 2A match Wednesday night at Gonzaga Prep.
  • Mead boys favorites at 4A track regionals

The Mead boys track team is heavily favored to capture the 4A regional championship this weekend. Mead coach John Mires hopes to get about 15 of his 25 regional qualifiers to state. In some events the Panthers could get multiple qualifiers.
  • Correction

Lakeland sophomore Derek Bayley captured the 4A state golf tournament medalist honor Tuesday. It was inadvertently left out of our Wednesday prep roundup. Bayley won on the first hole of a three-way playoff. He fired a 4-under-par 68 on Monday and followed with a 72 on Tuesday.

  • Not a lot to scream about today

A GRIP ON SPORTS Yesterday we didn't write a lot due to back problems. Well, after a trip to the doctor and pharmacist (who I presumed was a Cougar because almost every pharmacist around here is a Cougar), we're doing a bit better. A bit better, as in we can actually sit at our computer and type without screaming. Read on.

Practice didn’t make them perfect, but the Central Valley boys soccer team was close enough when it mattered most Tuesday night. Just as the lyrics her cellphone ringback reveal, wildflower Alana Norman just needs a little sun, a little rain and an open field to play.

A GRIP ON SPORTS So what's a blogger to do on Mother's Day? Tell a story about mom? Would that be present enough? It's going to have to be. Read on.
