    The Central Valley boys basketball team has at least eight players capable of scoring in double figures in any game. A pair of Bears had career-high offensive efforts Saturday afternoon as Central Valley handled Ferris 75-58 in Greater Spokane League play at Wayne Gilman Court.
  • Colfax girls win, now tied for second

    Rachel Robinson led three players in double figures with 14 points and Colfax moved into a tie for second place in the Bi-County 2B League with a 58-51 win over host Northwest Christian Saturday. Amelie Bruya scored 12 points and Hannah Harazin chipped in 10 for the Bulldogs (13-6, 12-3). Treasure Farmer and Courtney Gray scored 15 points apiece for the Crusaders (15-4, 12-3).
  • Central Valley girls claim GSL title

    The Central Valley girls basketball team captured its second Greater Spokane League championship in three years Saturday. The No. 1-ranked Bears put four players in double-figure scoring to coast past the Ferris Saxons 71-50 at Wayne Gilman Court.
  • First-place Moscow boys stop Sandpoint

    Derek Pennington hit five 3-pointers and finished with 22 points – 17 in the second half – as Moscow stayed perfect in the Inland Empire 4A League with a 64-50 win over the Sandpoint Saturday in Sandpoint. Lane Brooks scored 13 points and Nick Ellison added 10 for Moscow (8-10, 4-0).

    When Mead began its string of five straight finals wins from the strength of its lineup, four by pin, the team race was already a foregone conclusion. The Panthers had piled up 451.5 points before the District 8 4A wrestling tournament finals had even started.

  • Sophomore reserve sparks Coeur d’Alene past rival Lake City

    At the beginning of the season, Coeur d’Alene girls basketball coach Dale Poffenroth knew his sophomores would have to make an impact at some point. That point came Friday – at least for Brittany Tackett. Tackett came off the bench with three starters in foul trouble in the first half and provided a spark as the No. 1-ranked Vikings easily disposed of Lake City 58-35 in a 5A Region I opener at Elmer Jordan Court.
  • Reardan boosts record to 18-0 in girls basketball

    Kelsey Moos led three players in double figures with 16 points as Reardan dumped Kettle Falls 68-21 in Bi-County 2B League play Friday night in Kettle Falls. Katy Burge had 14 points and Chantel Heath added 13 for the Indians (18-0, 14-0), who outscored the Bulldogs (5-14, 4-11) 28-0 in the second quarter.
  • Newport eliminates Lakeside in boys basketball

    Jeron Konkright hit a jumper with 1.6 seconds left to give Newport a 51-49 win over Lakeside in a District 7 1A boys basketball elimination game Friday in Newport. Jake Wiley scored a game-high 20 points for the Grizzlies (12-9).

    A GRIP ON SPORTS So we are supposed to have six more weeks of winter, right? Well if it's anything like the preceding six weeks, I'm fine with that. Other than a couple days, this has been an easy winter to navigate in the Inland Northwest. Now for the basketball around the area, that hasn't been as warm. Read on.

    Mt. Spokane used a big third quarter to open a 35-28 lead over the University Titans. The Titans, though, rallied in the fourth quarter behind Kayleigh Valley and Hallie Gennett as University (12-5 overall, 10-5 league) pulled out a 50-47 win over the visiting Wildcats (5-12, 4-11) in Greater Spokane League girls basketball play Thursday.

    It went down to the final seconds, but the Greater Spokane League-leading Central Valley boys basketball team extended its winning streak to 11 Thursday. Austin Rehkow made two free throws with 9 seconds remaining to lift the Bears past the visiting Rogers Pirates 51-48.

    It’s been a whirlwind couple of days for Ferris standout defensive end Drew Sharkey. On Sunday, Sharkey gave an oral commitment to Eastern Washington University. On Monday, a late offer arrived. On Tuesday, Sharkey changed his mind and decided to go to Idaho State University sight unseen.

  • Kemp, Thomas named to hall of fame

    Two former cross country coaches with area ties – Bill Kemp and Ross Thomas – have been named to the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. Kemp, a Spokane native who graduated from North Central in 1964, spent 30 years as head coach at Riverside in Chattaroy. In that span, Kemp took 25 girls teams and 21 boys teams to state. The boys earned eight trophies and the girls 16. Two boys and two girls teams captured state championships.
  • Three Mead wrestlers aim for repeat

    A combination of intellect and talent has sent Mead wrestler Jordan Rogers on Gulliver-like travels and drawn coast-to-coast recruiting attention from Ivy League universities to Stanford. But the journey is not yet over for the Oklahoma State signee and one of the finest wrestlers in Greater Spokane League history.
