A GRIP ON SPORTS
Yesterday we didn't write a lot due to back problems. Well, after a trip to the doctor and pharmacist (who I presumed was a Cougar because almost every pharmacist around here is a Cougar), we're doing a bit better. A bit better, as in we can actually sit at our computer and type without screaming. Read on.

Practice didn’t make them perfect, but the Central Valley boys soccer team was close enough when it mattered most Tuesday night. After playing visiting Emerald Ridge to a 3-3 tie through regulation and two overtimes, the Bears dominated the penalty-kick shootout in a first-round State 4A playoff match.

Mead senior Stephen Thoen had to work for 18 holes to earn the District 8 4A boys golf championship. Lewis and Clark senior Megan Haase had to work even longer – three playoff holes – before claiming girls medalist honors for the second straight year.

Northwest Christian, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague and Reardan earned state baseball berths after District 7 2B play Tuesday at Medical Lake. NWC’s Crusaders beat the LRS Broncos 2-0 to earn the No. 1 seed to state. David Yoppini went the distance, striking out 10, and also hit a two-run double that accounted for both runs in the game.

Kellogg junior Kaceelyn Pouttu won her third consecutive state title, winning by 26 strokes at the Idaho 3A tournament at Preston Golf Course on Tuesday. Pouttu shot a 72 on Monday and a 73 on Tuesday for a 145, easily good enough to beat second-place finisher Evanann Woodcock of Weiser’s 171.

Jordan McGown lined a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in the winning run and complete a thrilling comeback on Saturday afternoon as Mead defeated Ferris 5-4 in a 4A Region I elimination baseball game at Mead. The win gave the Panthers (19-5) the region’s final berth to the state tournament. Ferris ends its season 16-8.

As high school all-star basketball games go, the Jack Blair Memorial Classic has stood the test of time. It’s 19 years old and features most of the top girls players from the area. That will be the case again June 4 when the Region takes on the Metro at University. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

Strange as it sounded at halftime, slowing down was the fastest route to state Saturday afternoon for the Central Valley boys soccer team. After falling behind early, the Bears scored twice in the second half to defeat visiting Chiawana of Pasco 2-1 in a 4A Regional match that sends CV to the state playoffs for the first time in five years.

For the Greater Spokane League boys and girls track champions, the District 8 4A meet went better than scripted.
Although no team trophies are awarded, Mead’s boys and Central Valley’s girls started their second seasons Friday evening by picking up where they left off in league. The Panthers, behind four-event champion Wes Bailey, piled up 194 points, 57.5 ahead of runner-up Ferris. The CV girls, behind three-event winner Savannah Hoekstra, finished with 177.5, 13 better than Mead.

It didn’t take long for Logan Georgeadis to feel a part of the Mt. Spokane soccer family. “The guys, they treated me like I’ve been here all four years,” said Georgeadis, a senior transfer from South Carolina who quickly got up to speed on what mattered on the pitch.

Shadle Park staked the Greater Spokane League champion University Titans to a five-run lead in the first two innings of the District 8 3A championship game Friday at Whitworth, then staged a dramatic comeback to claim an 8-5 win and the No. 1 seed into next weekend’s regional tournament at U-Hi. The Highlanders’ No. 1 pitcher all season, Kaycee Parisho, came on in relief of starter Brittany Gatley in the third inning and slammed the door on U-Hi. She scattered five hits and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning, but did not give up a run.

Carli Riordan scattered two hits and struck out 13 Mead Panthers to lead Central Valley to the District 8 4A fastpitch softball championship on Friday at Whitworth University. Behind a three-run home run by batterymate McKenzie Shea, the Bears claimed the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in next week’s regional tournament by stopping Mead 6-0.

Alex Marcinkowski of Gonzaga Prep and Leslie Ho of Central Valley both reached the State 4A tennis tournament a year ago, although neither placed. Each is a step away from a return trip after winning the boys and girls singles titles in this past week’s district tournament.

Ashton Stephenson was 4 for 4 and drove in five runs as St. Maries routed Priest River 16-2 in Idaho 3A District I baseball action Friday at Spirit Lake. The game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule after five innings. Stephenson went the distance on the mound, allowing one hit.
