Here is the likely reason that NC has fallen below the 3A population limit and had to “opt up” in order to stay in the GSL for 2012-14:

NC does not seem like it is any worse a building than Rogers or LC. What is the deal? Parking? They have a decent Pizza Rita just across the street and a McDonalds in easy walking distance. What more could a kid want? Is District 81 going to have to shift boundaries in order to equalize populations?

NC is an adequate facility at best. Rogers, Shadle, LC and soon to be Ferris all have state of the art remodels and updated buildings. No comparison. Not even close.

One has to wonder if NC (the school) has a future in District 81. It was built years ago in the wrong location (for sentimental reasons). Could District 81 get by with 2 northside schools (SP and Rogers) and 2 southside schools (LC and Ferris)? Demographics seem to indicate that the slide in overall population is not going to change as families move to the outlying districts like Mead and CV.
The alternative is spending a bunch of money to update NC or build a new one up towards Indian Trail.

Not a bad financial plan Al. It is the smallest GSL school by far. Maybe the district could use the building for Alternative Ed. programs, Administrative offices, Teacher training, etc.
LC is pretty big, but Ferris, Shadle and Rogers could all accept a few 100 kids. The shutting down of a building is HUGE savings for a district when you factor in all the costs. Gigantic actually.
However, every study shows smaller schools are more effective. The smaller, the more attention to all student needs and abilities. It is a tough choice in these times.

Selling the downtown administrative taj mahal and moving it to North Central would save millions.
Better yet, get rid of about half of the occupants in the downtown taj mahal and save even more millions every year but that is an entirely different discussion.
It would be interesting to see whether North Central could be converted to a smaller, specialized school - AP only? arts? technical? and still provide extracurricular activities as athletics to provide the local community with a rallying point. I would suspect that would require dropping down to 2A and joining the GNL.
With the current student population, NC is probably doing more with less than any other public school in the GSL (Prep excluded, for obvious reasons). But to expect them to compete with Central Valley or LC on a regular basis with half the student body isn’t reasonable.
