  • Assisted living allows individuals to maintain independence while receiving needed help with tasks, such as dressing, showering and taking medication as prescribed. Facilities also provide intermittent nursing services. Amenities and prices can vary substantially from place to place. Some places have posh dining rooms, swimming pools, beauty shops, ice cream parlors and more. Others might offer a more humble living environment with personalized care.

To make the search for assisted living and residential care for people with mental illness easier, The Spokesman-Review has posted inspections and letters of enforcement for about 70 assisted living centers. The records were collected from 2004 through fall of 2006.

When searching through the state inspections and letters of enforcement, remember that it's common for facilities to have shortcomings that need to be improved. However, if the same problems happen in volume or constantly reappear, it can signify that the facility has ongoing problems.
