I find myself thinking about Ruby Ridge more and more lately, as I watch our country riven by these deep divisions – not just political differences – but a chasm of seemingly alternate facts, of entirely different realities. Communication without trust is difficult, but without agreement over basic reality, it’s impossible.

Ex-reporters recount Ruby Ridge standoff, aftermath

The 11-day siege known as Ruby Ridge became a bookmark in the lives of two Spokane journalists who covered the event before their careers moved in other directions. “I remember going to the Bonners Ferry airport the morning of the second day, as military helicopters and what appeared to be armored personnel carriers were deploying from the airstrip,” recalled former KXLY-TV reporter John Allison, who’s now a Spokane attorney.

Woman forgives Ruby Ridge federal agents

KALISPELL, Mont. – Sara Weaver-Balter has forgiven the federal agents who shot and killed her mother and brother 18 years ago on Idaho’s Ruby Ridge. That’s the message she wants to impart to the nation and especially the people who did the shooting.
