‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ still dominating the movie galaxy

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is continuing its dominance over the movie galaxy as expected, outpacing three new releases. The eighth installment in the Disney-owned space saga is expected to add another nearly $69 million to its coffers over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Writer/director Rian Johnson goes for broke during his turn at bat in the “Star Wars” franchise, and he delivers an epic space opera with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” a film that is as indebted to the previous installments and “Star Wars” canon as it is to classic Westerns, sword and sandal epics, and martial arts films. After this impressive showing, it’s no wonder producer Kathleen Kennedy has hired Johnson to make a trilogy of “Star Wars” films with a whole new cast of characters.

Actress and writer Carrie Fisher, who rose to global fame as the trail-blazing intergalactic heroine Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” franchise and later went on to establish herself as an author and screenwriter with an acerbic comic flair, has died.
