AFL: Former Spokane head coach Rob Keefe (pictured above) is the new defensive coordinator for the Utah Blaze, one of the Shock’s West Division rivals. Keefe, 31, was fired as Orlando’s offensive coordinator after four games this season. Keefe, along with current Blaze offensive coordinator Matt Sauk, helped Spokane win an ArenaBowl title in 2010 but Keefe was fired after a 9-10 campaign in 2011.

Community Colleges of Spokane’s track and field teams dominated the NWAACC Championships, which concluded Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College. The Sasquatch women won their ninth consecutive title, while the men won their eighth straight. CCS’ Jason Cash was voted Men’s Coach of the Year.

How those first nine games are measured depends in large part on tonight’s outcome. A win over Philadelphia (7-2) would boost Spokane (4-4) above .500 for the first time this year, rank as the biggest victory of the season considering the Soul’s No. 2 ranking and enhance the Shock’s playoff chances.

Mead product Nate Blackham’s two-run single in the eighth inning proved the difference as Washington State beat USC 3-1 in Pac-12 baseball action Tuesday in Pullman. Jason Monda also had an RBI double for the Cougars (25-24, 10-14 Pac-12), who snapped a four-game losing streak.

On a night when a lot went wrong for the Spokane Shock, Terrance Sanders did a ton of things right. Sanders picked off two passes – one in overtime – and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, helping Spokane escape with a 68-62 Arena Football League victory over New Orleans in front of an announced crowd of 8,918 Friday at the Arena.

Spokane is keeping its training staff and the Arena Football League offices busy. The Shock were so depleted near the end of Friday’s 84-63 loss to Utah that they only put seven players on the field for a kickoff. Nobody else was available to reach the eight-man limit. The Shock used seven different players at the jack and mac linebacker positions.

SALT LAKE CITY – Spokane remains winless against Arena Football League West Division rivals this season. Utah thumped the Shock 84-63 on Friday at EnergySolutions Arena, dropping Spokane to 0-3 against the West and 3-4 overall. Fifth-ranked Utah improved to 6-2 with its fourth consecutive victory.

Spokane is doing its part to get back into the West Division race by winning two straight games, but division rivals aren’t cooperating. The Shock resides in last place at 3-3. Arizona, San Jose and Utah are 5-2 and ranked in the top five. While Arizona and San Jose have outscored opponents by more than 100 points, Utah is just plus-12 in scoring margin and has pulled out wins by one, one, three and eight points.
