Whitworth men fight back to defeat Whitman

Colton McCargar scored 23 points and Dustin McConnell added 20, including a 3-pointer with 7 minutes and 23 seconds left to snap a 67-all tie, as Whitworth (12-4, 6-1 Northwest Conference) held on for an 84-80 win over Whitman (10-6, 5-2) at Walla Walla.

Freshman Christian Jurlina added 15 points, including two free throws with 5 seconds left to secure the win.

McConnell hit 6 of 8 3-pointers to lead the Pirates’ 15-for-24 effort.

Whitman led 56-44 with 17:46 left before Whitworth rallied. McConnell hit a layup for an 82-76 lead with 2:04 left.

Women’s hoops

Division III third-ranked Whitman (16-0, 7-0 NWC) scored the final seven points of the game to defeat Whitworth 62-57 at Walla Walla.

The Pirates (11-5, 5-2) dashed to an 8-0 advantage and led 11-2 before the Missionaries reeled off 13 consecutive points. KC McConnell, who scored 18 points, gave Whitworth a 39-35 lead with 13:45 left and their final lead (57-55) with a 3-pointer with 2:27 to go.


New Whitworth head coach Rod Sandberg announced the hiring of Adam Richbart as defensive coordinator.

Richbart served six years as assistant coach at Wheaton (Ill.) College, Sandberg’s last coaching job. Richbart graduated from Wheaton in 2007 with a degree in physics.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock traded defensive back Patrick Stoudamire to the Portland Thunder for future considerations.

Stoudamire recorded 74 tackles and had six interceptions during two seasons with the Shock.

The Shock also announced the retirement of fullback/offensive lineman Will Falakiseni, who started 17 games at fullback last season.

Track and field

Eastern Washington senior pole vaulter Keisa Monterola earned her sixth Big Sky Conference Field Athlete of the Week honor after placing second during last Saturday’s University of Washington Indoor Preview by clearing 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches.

Men’s tennis

EWU freshman Robert Dula was named Big Sky Player of the Week after No. 1 singles wins over players from Willamette and Portland State.
