Front Porch: Many places for zucchini to find a home

“We went on vacation – the squash did not,” Cindy Hval said in an email about Tuesday’s harvest, shown. “It’s like the zucchini are mocking me.” (Cindy Hval / The Spokesman-Review)
Every great adventure deserves and sometimes demands a sequel. Such is the case with my previous column about surplus squash. When I wrote about the Great Zucchini Invasion of 2017, readers responded with recipes, suggestions of where to donate the surplus, and offers to take some zucchini off my hands – or countertops.

Somebody Needs You

The goal of Somebody Needs You is to match donors with the specific requests of needy Spokane residents. The list of requests is coordinated by the Volunteers of America in cooperation with recognized social service agencies in Spokane. If you have an item to donate, please contact the social service agency directly. Donors who can deliver items are especially appreciated. If someone you know needs help, contact a local social service agency provider.

‘Cowgirl Camp’ to emphasize role of women in agriculture

Two farm-raised women are putting on a workshop on sustainable farming and ranching at Beth Robinette’s Cheney farm. Beth, shown with her horses, Marshall, left, and Sunka, is a second-generation rancher. (Dan Pelle / The Spokesman-Review)
Beth Robinette walked in among her cattle, leaned forward and mooed. A low, guttural “How are you all doing this morning?” kind of moo. All around her, black cows lifted their heads and, one at a time, they mooed back. “It’s funny, isn’t it?” Robinette said, standing in the pasture that’s been grazed by her family’s cattle for three generations. “They always respond.”
