Duke freshman Carta, USC lead NCAA women’s golf

EUGENE – Duke freshman Virginia Elena Carta opened a six-stroke lead Sunday in the NCAA women’s golf tournament and Southern California topped the 15 team qualifiers. Carta, from Italy, shot a 6-under 66 at Eugene Country Club to reach 13-under 203 and break the 54-hole record of 9 under set by Grace Park of Arizona State in 1998 and matched by Jennifer Rosales of Southern California in 1998, Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke in 2002 and Annie Park of USC in 2013.

Notebook: Marlins veteran Ichiro Suzuki closing in on 3,000 hits

Ichiro Suzuki continued his assault on the record books when, playing in place of injured outfielder Christian Yelich, he recorded four hits on Saturday. He added two more on Sunday to give him 2,956. “That’s why I’m here,” Ichiro said Sunday. “I’m always trying to be the best fourth outfielder I can, and I got that opportunity Saturday.”
