MLB panel says baseballs getting extra lift, cause unknown

Baseballs really have been getting extra lift since 2015, and it’s not from the exaggerated uppercuts batters are taking, according to a 10-person committee of researchers hired by the commissioner’s office.

Sharks finalize 7-year deal with high-scoring Evander Kane

The San Jose Sharks signed pending free agent forward Evander Kane to a seven-year contract Thursday that keeps the high-scoring winger off the open market and part of the Sharks long-term future.

Williams sisters to team up in doubles at French Open

Two-time champions Serena and Venus Williams will compete in doubles at the French Open. The American sisters were handed a wild-card entry on Thursday into the tournament they won together in 1999 and in 2010.

‘It’s about time’: Trump pardons late boxer Jack Johnson

President Donald Trump has granted a rare posthumous pardon to boxing’s first black heavyweight champion more than 100 years after what many see as his racially charged conviction. Jack Johnson was convicted in 1913 by an all-white jury for violating the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport women across state lines for “immoral” purposes. Trump says the pardon will “correct a wrong that occurred in our history” and “honor a truly legendary boxing champion.”

Alex Ovechkin, Capitals headed to Stanley Cup Final vs. Vegas

Alex Ovechkin is thrilled, though hardly satisfied. The Washington Capitals star is headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in his 13-year career, eager to put more distance between the Eastern Conference champions and a lingering perception of Ovechkin and the Caps as playoff underachievers. The Caps will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the Cup final.

Celtics beat Cavs 96-83 in Game 5, lead East finals 3-2

Rookie Jayson Tatum scored 24 points and Al Horford had 15 points and 12 rebounds to help the Boston Celtics beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-83 and take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics remained perfect in Boston this postseason with their 10th straight victory at home and moved within one win of their first trip to the NBA Finals since 2010.

Alex Ovechkin, Braden Holtby shine in Game 7, Caps beat Lightning 4-0

Alex Ovechkin scored early and Andre Burakovsky added two second-period goals to help the Washington Capitals put a decade of playoff frustration behind them with a 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final. Braden Holtby stopped 29 shots for his second straight shutout.
