Out of Right Field: Trader Jerry DiPoto strikes again for Mariners

Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto made perhaps the most signifcant move of the 2018 Major League Baseball season to date, acquiring All-Star closer Alex Colome and veteran outfielder Denard Span from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday in exchange for a pair of minor league right-handers, Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero.

Cavaliers’ Kevin Love to miss Game 7 vs. Celtics with concussion

Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star forward Kevin Love has a concussion and will miss Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics. Love banged heads with Boston rookie Jayson Tatum in the first quarter of Game 6 and did not play again. The Cavaliers overcame his loss and won 109-99 to force Game 7. Love is Cleveland’s second leading scorer and one of four players left from the 2016 NBA title team.

Gleyber Torres became the youngest American League player to homer in four straight games, Aaron Judge threw out a pair of runners from right field and the New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Friday night in New York. Shohei Ohtani, the two-way Japanese rookie sensation, came to bat with the potential tying run on base and two outs in the eighth. New York brought in closer Aroldis Chapman to face Ohtani with Justin Upton at first. Chapman threw a wild pitch that advanced the runner, Ohtani sent a 100 mph pitch just foul of the left-field pole, then grounded out on a 101 mph offering.
