Men’s basketball: Love scores career-high 28 in Pirates’ win

Kenny Love scored a career-high 28 points and second-ranked Whitworth used a 14-1 run late in the second half to get past Calvin at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. Love made 6 of 13 shots from the field, 4 of 8 3-pointers and 12 of 13 free throws. His previous career high was 26 last season against Linfield.

Thunderbirds top Chiefs 2-1

KENT -- The excitement from Kailer Yamamoto’s equalizer early in the third period was short lived on Tuesday night. Seattle’s Keegan Kolesar scored 11 seconds after Yamamoto tied it at 1 and the Thunderbirds held on for a 2-1 Western Hockey League win over the Spokane Chiefs at the ShoWare Center.

Women’s basketball: Pirates fall to Babson

The Whitworth women’s basketball team fell to Bobson 70-62 in its opening game of the Music City Classic Tuesday in Nashville. Whitworth had a 57-53 lead with 5:50 to play, but the Pirates shooters went cold and the Beavers (7-2) then went on a 12-0 run to put the game away. Faith Emerson led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds. KC McConnell and Grace Douglas also scored 14 for the Pirates.
