Golf: Canadian teen Brooke Henderson opened a five-stroke lead Saturday in the Cambia Portland Classic, shooting a 7-under 65 at Columbia Edgewater in Portland. The 17-year-old Henderson is trying to join Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson as the only players to win an LPGA Tour title before turning 18. Henderson made seven birdies on a warm, calm day.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Simone Biles successfully defended her all-around title in the Secret U.S. Classic on Saturday night, continuing a run of victories for the reigning world champion. The event featured the return to U.S. gymnastics competition for Gabby Douglas, the American all-around gold medalist in the London Olympics, who was second, nearly two points behind Biles.

Martha Karolyi will likely retire after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the longtime U.S. women’s gymnastics coach said Friday. Karolyi, 72, officially USA Gymnastics’ national team coordinator, has headed the team since 2001, when she took over for her husband, Bela Karolyi. “I am pretty much decided that Rio will be my last competition,” Karolyi said after a practice session Friday in preparation for today’s U.S. Classic competition near Chicago. “I have no bad feelings about that, because I accomplished so much and I’m very happy with that.” The Karolyis have trained nine Olympic champions. – Associated Press

Simone Biles rolls to American Cup title in home state

Simone Biles led from the start in a record-setting win Saturday at the American Cup gymnastics event in Arlington, Texas. It was her first competition since taking a second straight world all-around title last year. The 4-foot-8 dynamo was the star of the first gymnastics event in the huge $1.2 billion home of the Dallas Cowboys, about 230 miles from where she lives and trains in the Houston suburbs. Biles, 17, had the highest score on each event for 62.299 points to 57.832 for MyKayla Skinner of the United States, beating the previous record margin by more than two points. Two-time U.S. men’s champion Sam Mikulak fell off the pommel horse, the second event, and finished fourth. Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine was the men’s winner, and Mikulak teammate Donnell Whittenburg was third. – AP
