Nelson Cruz, Denard Span hit back-to-back homers to lead Mariners to victory

SEATTLE – Nelson Cruz and Denard Span hit back-to-back home runs, and the Seattle Mariners overcame sloppy infield defense to beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 on Wednesday night. Despite winning their first home series since July 22, the Mariners failed to gain ground on Oakland in the A.L. wild-card race. They still trail by 5 1/2 games with 22 games remaining.

A brawl involving several players broke out in the Seattle Mariners’ clubhouse Tuesday afternoon several hours before a game at Safeco Field. Shortstop Jean Segura, catcher Mike Zunino and other players were involved in the fighting.

Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura was a late scratch against the Oakland Athletics, one day after being forced out of the game in San Diego when he fouled a ball off his shin. No official reason was given for the change, which forced Mariners manager Scott Servais to jumble his lineup.
