State basketball: Matchups set for 26 area teams, including 9 from Greater Spokane League, at state venues

High school basketball teams from across Washington will descend on the three state venues starting with the elimination “Round of 12” on Wednesday at Tacoma Dome (4A/3A), Yakima Valley SunDome (2A/1A) and Spokane Arena (2B/1B). There are 26 teams – 13 boys and 13 girls – from the Spokane area still vying for a state title.

Tuesday marked the first state basketball games in Ridgeline school history. While both teams played in elimination games, the girls had the luxury of playing at home, while the boys were on the opposite side of the state.

Girls basketball: Gonzaga Prep edges Chiawana in overtime to qualify for state; Mead cruises to 3A district title

Gonzaga Prep had split a pair of games with Chiawana this season already, falling in the first game of the season but getting revenge in the first round of the district tournament last week. The grudge match, Saturday at Gonzaga Prep, carried the winner-to-state, loser-out pressure that two teams ranked in the top 10 in state should not have had to bear.

Even though both teams had already claimed a berth to state, Saturday’s meeting between Mt. Spokane and North Central still meant a lot. At stake was the district title, a potential protected seed to next week’s regional round, and perhaps, pecking order in the Greater Spokane League 3A ranks.

Mead has been ranked No. 1 in 3A by the state media poll all season long. The Panthers got a bit of a first-half wake-up call by their school district rival, but their state title contender pedigree showed in the second half.
