Shock wide receiver works tirelessly to improve his game

Greg Orton was at his apartment and happened to glance out the window to see Spokane Shock head coach Rob Keefe’s car go by. His heart sank when Keefe approached the front door. The Shock had proven receivers in Raul Vijil, Huey Whittaker and Markee White, but Orton thought he had a good shot at making the roster near the conclusion of the 2010 training camp.

Meyer leads new-look Shock to critical victory over Soul

It looked like the good old days for the new-look Spokane Shock. New starting quarterback Erik Meyer tossed seven touchdown passes, the defense converted two interceptions into points and Taylor Rowan delivered two successful onside kicks as Spokane defeated Philadelphia 75-54 in front of 8,972 Friday at the Arena, the smallest regular-season crowd in franchise history.

Shock call on ex-EWU quarterback Meyer

With Tommy Grady directing the offense in Utah, Erik Meyer played where and when he could. He served as the long snapper, helped on kick returns and even played one down at receiver. Grady’s pass went elsewhere, but it gave Meyer the opportunity to say what every receiver has said to every quarterback at every level of football: “Hey, I was open.”

Shock QB Meyer champing at bit

The wait is almost over for Erik Meyer. After four seasons as a record-setting quarterback for the Eastern Washington Eagles, Meyer has spent five often frustrating years trying to carve out a spot in professional football. He was a backup for the Arena Football League’s Utah Blaze when the Spokane Shock, in dire need of a quarterback, traded for Meyer last week.

Spokane Shock release quarterback Hansen after two games

Casey Hansen’s second stint as a Spokane Shock quarterback lasted two games. The Arena Football League team released Hansen and wide receiver Ryan Bagley on Thursday. It was also announced that new center Raymond McNeil, acquired along with quarterback Erik Meyer in a trade earlier this week, will be one of the team’s three marketing players who earn $1,000 per game instead of $400. Defensive end Khreem Smith, dealt to Utah along with center Antonio Narcisse, will have the same designation with the Blaze.

Shock making deals

Spokane has made a trade it hopes will resolve its quarterback issues, but it came at a steep price. The Shock dealt standout defensive end Khreem Smith and center Antonio Narcisse to Utah for quarterback Erik Meyer and center Raymond McNeil. Meyer, the former Eastern Washington Eagle, was Kyle Rowley’s backup in Spokane most of last season.

Lakeside finishes 3rd, Colville 4th at state softball tournament

Lakeside’s and Colville’s head softball coaches crossed paths between fields at Merkel Sports Complex shortly after their teams absorbed agonizing losses in the State 1A tournament semifinals Saturday. “Tough one, Coach?” said Colville’s Mandy Sumner, commiserating with Lakeside’s Chuck Moffatt.

NEA rivals reach 1A semifinals

Lakeside and Colville remain on a collision course at the State 1A fastpitch softball tournament, but they have one more sizable obstacle to clear. Both Northeast A squads won twice Friday to move into the semifinals. Colville drubbed Zillah 17-0 and edged defending champion Castle Rock 2-1 at Franklin Park. Lakeside survived a shaky start and lengthy rain delay to thump 2008-09 champ Montesano 8-1 before handling Cle Elum/Roslyn 13-2.

Shock head to Kansas City for rematch

Spokane faces another Arena Football League opponent with a losing record tonight, but that has been the source of some of the Shock’s toughest losses this season. The Shock (4-6) visit Kansas City (3-7), eight weeks after drubbing the Command 61-34 at the Arena.

New Shock quarterback Hansen learns as he goes

Spokane hopes the old football adage about teams making their biggest improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 applies to the quarterback position. Casey Hansen, out of football for more than a year, was thrust into the starting role following injuries to quarterbacks Bill Stull and Kyle Rowley. Hansen absorbed a number of punishing hits from Tampa Bay’s defensive front in Spokane’s 51-42 loss Friday.

Backup QBs will run show during Shock’s game with Tampa Bay

The unpredictable nature of sports will be on full display when the Spokane Shock entertain Tampa Bay tonight at the Arena. Nobody on the planet would have projected Casey Hansen and Brian Zbydniewski as the starting quarterbacks when the Arena Football League released the 2011 schedule last October, but the two will be the central figures in a rematch of ArenaBowl XXIII.

Shock search for quarterback to fill injuries

The Spokane Shock were 30 minutes into practice Tuesday when quarterback Bill Stull approached head coach Rob Keefe with a smile on his face. Stull, still on crutches after injuring his left knee in his first start Saturday, informed the coach that MRI results indicated he didn’t suffer a serious injury. Stull has a bone bruise and slight sprain. Recovery time can vary, but Stull isn’t expected to go on injured reserve, a minimum four-week stint. He’s not expected to play Friday against Tampa Bay.
