Gonzaga’s focus against St. John’s centers on zone

DENVER – Gonzaga has experience against some of college basketball’s most heralded zone defenses: Syracuse’s trademark 2-3 in last year’s NCAA tournament, Baylor’s extended 1-1-3 in December. The Bulldogs will go against another highly regarded zone, the trapping, turnover-inducing defense of the St. John’s Red Storm in an intriguing NCAA tournament matchup at the Pepsi Center tonight at approximately 6:45 PST.

Injured senior leader Kennedy keeps St. John’s enthusiastic

DENVER – St. John’s lost a standout player in the Big East tournament, but gained a quasi-assistant coach. D.J. Kennedy, a 6-foot-5 swingman who ranks in the Red Storm’s all-time top 12 in scoring, rebounding and steals, suffered a torn ACL in his right knee early in a quarterfinals loss to Syracuse. It was a devastating setback for a player who, along with nine other seniors, has helped return the program to prominence after missing the last eight NCAA tournaments.

Carter at center of Gonzaga resurge

Marquise Carter’s first crack at the starting job came in the second game of the season, but he played 13 non-descript minutes. His next chance came in mid-December after a couple of strong efforts off the bench for the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team, including a clutch 13-point showing versus Baylor.

Gonzaga will open with St. John’s in Denver

The Gonzaga Bulldogs waited so long to see their name to pop up on the television screen on Selection Sunday that junior center Robert Sacre had to do a quick fact check. “I think we were the last one listed,” Sacre said. “I started thinking, ‘Did we actually win the WCC? Are we in? We are, right?’ ”

Are we in? We are, right?’” Turns out it was worth the wait. The West Coast Conference tournament champion Bulldogs (24-9) seemed OK with their seed (No. 11), fine with their opponent (No. 6 St. John’s) and ecstatic about the location (the Pepsi Center in Denver at approximately 6:45 Pacific time Thursday).

AFL top-ranked Spokane Shock open against No. 2 San Jose

Spokane head coach Rob Keefe believes his team plays in the toughest division in the Arena Football League. The AFL preseason poll seems to agree with Keefe. The Shock will begin to find out where they stand in the National Conference West Division when they open the 2011 season against San Jose, a three-time AFL champion returning to the field for the first time since 2008. Kickoff at HP Pavilion in San Jose is at 8 tonight.

Nevada knocks ailing Vandals out of WAC tournament

LAS VEGAS – Short-handed and running on fumes, the University of Idaho women’s basketball team gave Nevada all it could handle deep into the second half. That’s when the tiring Vandals lost track of Nevada senior guard Tahnee Robinson, who poured in 20 of her career-high 35 points in the last 11:18 to carry the fourth-seeded Wolf Pack (21-9) to a 75-61 win in the WAC women’s tournament quarterfinals Thursday at the Orleans Arena.

San Jose State thrives on outside game in WAC tournament win over Idaho

LAS VEGAS – After doing just about everything right to dig out of a nine-point deficit in the second half, the Idaho Vandals did just everything wrong with the outcome hanging in the balance. No. 4 Idaho committed five late turnovers, one leading to a breakaway layup that gave San Jose State the lead for good, and the eighth-seeded Spartans went on to post a 74-68 victory in the WAC men’s basketball tournament quarterfinals Thursday at the Orleans Arena.

Idaho remains wary of San Jose State at WAC tournament

LAS VEGAS – The last time Idaho saw San Jose State, the Vandals led by 10 with just less than 2 minutes to play, by eight with 1 minute left and by five in the first overtime. The Vandals ended up losing in double overtime a month ago, one of their most painful setbacks of the season. Fourth-seeded Idaho (18-12) will get another shot at the Spartans in the WAC men’s basketball tournament quarterfinals at noon today. No. 8 San Jose State (16-14) advanced by edging No. 5 Hawaii 75-74 on Adrian Oliver’s 17-foot jumper with 4 seconds left Wednesday at the Orleans Arena.

Spokane Shock should look familiar on offense

The Spokane Shock are close to finalizing their opening-day roster and it should look pretty familiar on offense, quite a bit different on defense. Spokane, which visits San Jose on Friday to launch the 2011 Arena Football League season, will probably start six players returning from last year’s offense.

Vandals women overcome illnesses to win WAC tourney opener

LAS VEGAS – Basketball coaches often say it’s difficult to beat a good team three times. Try doing it when a starting guard spends the night before the game in the hospital and two other starters are battling illness. None of that bothered fifth-seeded Idaho, which rode Yinka Olorunnife’s big first half and a balanced attack in the second to a 70-59 victory over No. 8 Boise State in the opening round of the WAC women’s tournament Wednesday at the Orleans Arena.

Gonzaga grabs WCC tournament title away from Saint Mary’s

LAS VEGAS – The Gonzaga Bulldogs have seemingly faced elimination games for the last month, so when they followed up their improbable run to a WCC regular-season title with a pair of gritty victories and a conference tournament championship, they’d certainly earned the right to celebrate. They didn’t hold back. Steven Gray, with a bandage covering a cut over his left eye that required four stitches, hopped up and down as the final seconds ticked away, waving his arms to exhort a pro-Gonzaga crowd. Robert Sacre was exhausted but sported a wide grin. Near the bench, coach Mark Few playfully put David Stockton in a head lock.

Second-seeded Gonzaga repelled numerous second-half rallies by No. 3 San Francisco as Carter hit seven free throws in the final 43 seconds and the Bulldogs hung on for a 71-67 victory in the WCC men’s basketball tournament semifinals Sunday in front of 7,489 at the Orleans Arena.

GU women rout Portland, roll into final

LAS VEGAS – It had all the elements of a typical Gonzaga women’s basketball rout of an overmatched opponent, and a couple others that were particularly satisfying for head coach Kelly Graves. On a day when Courtney Vandersloot set a WCC Tournament record with 14 assists and mainstays Kayla Standish (23 points) and Katelan Redmon (12 points, eight rebounds) made their customary contributions, Gonzaga also received a big effort from Janelle Bekkering, its bench and its defense in crushing Portland 96-71 in front of 2,383 Sunday at the Orleans Arena.
