Zags’ bench comes through against Xavier

For the second straight game, the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ depth and resourcefulness were tested. Put another “A” in the grade book and another “W” on their record. Playing without leading scorer Steven Gray, the Bulldogs got another big game from center Robert Sacre and solid contributions from back-up guards Mathis Keita and David Stockton to dig out a 64-54 men’s basketball win over Xavier in front of 6,000 Wednesday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Bulldogs will have to defend five Musketeers

Mark Few sees a lot of Gonzaga in Xavier, and vice versa. “They’ve had a great run, just like we have,” Gonzaga’s coach said of the Musketeers, who visit GU tonight at the McCarthey Athletic Center. “We’re kind of mirror images of each other.”

Gray’s return pinned to treatment

Steven Gray sat in a chair on what would normally be the visiting team’s bench at the McCarthey Athletic Center, watching Gonzaga teammates attempt 3-pointers from nearby seats. He had his arms draped over the top of adjacent chairs. And he didn’t move much during a short interview. As those who’ve experienced back issues know, once you find a comfortable position, you tend to stay put.

Brown does job

There may have been some doubters in Eagle Nation when Eastern Washington took on defending national champion Villanova, ranked seventh in rush defense in the Football Championship Subdivision, without All-American running back Taiwan Jones. Jones wasn’t among them. Neither was Jones’ replacement, freshman Mario Brown, who churned between the tackles for 104 yards, 60 in the first quarter as Eastern Washington built an early lead that it never surrendered. The Eagles went on to claim a 41-31 victory over the Wildcats in the FCS playoff semifinals Friday at Roos Field.

Zags return to the fire against Bears

After a one-game break, the Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball team returns to its rugged nonconference schedule today, taking on No. 9 Baylor in Dallas. The Bulldogs (5-5) routed NAIA Lewis-Clark State College on Thursday night, but there wasn’t much time to celebrate. They boarded a bus early Friday to catch an 8 a.m. charter flight to Dallas. The Bears (7-0) will be the fifth ranked opponent thus far on Gonzaga’s schedule. Meanwhile, Baylor has seven double-digit home wins.

Gonzaga’s fine and so is Gray in easy victory

On the basketball court, the Gonzaga Bulldogs had fun again. On the scoreboard, the Bulldogs cruised past Lewis-Clark State College 103-61. In the training room, the news was positive as well. Senior guard Steven Gray left in the first half with Gonzaga well on its way to an easy nonconference victory in front of 6,000 Thursday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. There was additional concern when Gray left the bench to have his right big toe examined.

GU’s season boils down to 2 themes

Through its first nine games, two topics seem invariably linked to the Gonzaga men’s basketball team: its meat-grinder schedule and 3-point defense. The Bulldogs can’t do anything about the schedule at this point, but they hope to do a better job defending the 3-point arc. The schedule softens a bit during finals week with Lewis-Clark State College (7-2) visiting GU at the McCarthey Athletic Center tonight.

Another tough one for Zags

With a laundry list of concerns – offense, defense and team confidence probably at the top – Gonzaga will face its fourth ranked opponent in nine outings when it visits No. 23 Notre Dame today. The Bulldogs (4-4) carry a two-game losing streak into Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center for a nationally televised game with the Fighting Irish (8-1). Gonzaga hasn’t dropped three straight since falling to Connecticut, Portland State and Utah in late December 2008. Another streak GU is trying to avoid: falling below .500 this late into the season for the first time since mid-February of the 1990-91 campaign. That team won two of its last three to finish 14-14.

Gonzaga in unfamiliar territory at 4-3, unranked

Unranked and sporting a 4-3 record is unfamiliar territory for the Gonzaga men’s basketball team. The Bulldogs have never been 4-3 in Mark Few’s previous 11 seasons as head coach. They’ve been 5-2 five times (2000-03, 06), 6-1 five times and 7-0 in 2009.

Zags learning the hard way

Unranked and sporting a 4-3 record is unfamiliar territory for the Gonzaga men’s basketball team. The Bulldogs have never been 4-3 in Mark Few’s previous 11 seasons as head coach. They’ve been 5-2 five times (2000-03, 06), 6-1 five times and 7-0 in 2009. It doesn’t get any easier this week for the Zags, who face road tests against rival Washington State (5-1) on Wednesday and No. 23 Notre Dame (8-0) on Saturday. The Fighting Irish will be Gonzaga’s fourth ranked opponent, following losses to current No. 14 San Diego State, No. 5 Kansas State and No. 16 Illinois.

Illinois gives Zags repeat lesson on 3-pointers

SEATTLE – It reminded Illinois men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber of a stretch against Michigan State during the 2004-05 season when the Fighting Illini scored on 12 straight possessions. It reminded several of the Gonzaga Bulldogs of the Kansas State game Nov. 22, not exactly a warm and fuzzy memory.

Battle victor will get résumé boost

SEATTLE – Illinois men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber was addressing the importance of today’s Battle in Seattle showdown against Gonzaga at KeyArena, but his thoughts also hold true from a Bulldogs’ perspective. “If you want to be a high seed at the end of the year, these are the kind of games you have to win,” Weber said. “Ohio State has won at Florida and at Florida State. Those are nice marks on their résumé. This would be a great opportunity for us to get one on our résumé.”

Gonzaga too much for short-handed Eastern

Gonzaga senior guard Steven Gray jumped up and released a 3-point shot with just less than 4 minutes left in the first half, just like he’d done six times previously. The only difference? This one didn’t settle into the net. Gray triggered a 3-point barrage that saw the Bulldogs make their first seven from long distance and 9 of 10 in the first half as they breezed to an 86-57 men’s basketball victory over Eastern Washington in front of an announced crowd of 6,000 Tuesday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Play off bench mystery at Gonzaga

Five games into the Gonzaga men’s basketball season, coach Mark Few isn’t sure what he’s going to get when he calls on his bench. “It’s a grab bag from game to game; from day to day,” said Few, whose Bulldogs (3-2) entertain Eastern Washington (1-4) tonight at 6 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. “I don’t know if that will change. Some years you know what you’re getting and you have a real set rotation. Others, quite frankly, you just don’t.”
