75th annual Lilac Parade a fragrant, glittering success

The sun sets on the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade, but the community lights up the streets of Spokane – a local tradition for 75 years. A police motorcade revved up at the head of the procession, and the cool air smelled of lilacs as the Lilac Royal Court took their places. The namesake flowers are in bloom along Washington Street and Spokane Falls Boulevard.

Apartment raided in ricin investigation

Federal agents searched a Spokane apartment Saturday morning in connection with ricin-laced letters intercepted last week at a Spokane post office processing facility. Neighbors woke up to the sound of doors slamming as Spokane police officers blocked off streets in Browne’s Addition. Federal agents wearing gas masks stormed the second floor of the Osmun Apartments along First Avenue near Oak Street about 7 a.m.

Officer believed suspect had gun

A homicide suspect shot and killed by Spokane police officers Thursday died in front of his home after running from officers. The investigation of an earlier fatal shooting led officers to 22007 W. Charles Road, the home of Justin A. Cairns, 21, where officers found his truck and spotted him in a field behind the Nine Mile Falls home.

Sheriff’s detective on leave

A Spokane County sheriff’s detective faces felony charges of domestic violence and second-degree assault after allegedly using a flashlight to hit his girlfriend and another man at a drunken party Sunday near Odessa. Detective Dale T. Toliver, 46, had been drinking around a campfire at a barn party when he saw his girlfriend get into a pickup truck with another man, according to court documents filed in Lincoln County. Toliver allegedly opened the driver’s side door and hit his girlfriend with the 13-inch, heavy-duty flashlight.

Spokane police Officer Jeff Graves faces stalking, harassment claims

A Spokane police officer is on administrative leave following criminal allegations of stalking and harassment. A search warrant details a messy break-up and accusations of harassment between Officer Jeff Graves and a woman he had an affair with, as he told Spokane County Sheriff’s Office detectives. The investigation prompted the Spokane Police Department to remove Graves from patrol May 9, according to police spokeswoman Monique Cotton.

Fugitive tracked to Nevada shoots himself

A man who fled sentencing on federal child pornography charges shot himself at a Nevada motel while on the lam, according to sheriff’s officials in Eureka County, Nev. Federal agents sought Daniel L. Camp, 33, for nearly a month after he skipped his sentencing hearing in Spokane federal court. He pleaded guilty to sharing and possessing child pornography last year.
