Spokane man found dead days after assault by acquaintance

A Spokane man was found dead in his home eight days after he was assaulted by an acquaintance, but officials have not determined a cause of death. Edward E. Weed, 46, died in his home in northwest Spokane sometime after he was assaulted on Oct. 29. His mother found his decomposing body on Nov. 6 and called police. Weed’s dog was found locked in a bathroom. It was dehydrated but alive, despite having suffered multiple injuries to its head.

Officer’s body camera off during shooting

One Spokane police officer involved in the shooting of a domestic violence suspect last weekend was wearing a body camera but did not have it turned on, according to an initial investigation. Spokane police Chief Frank Straub announced at a public forum on Oct. 31 that the 17 officers wearing body cameras as part of the department’s pilot program would record every interaction they responded to, except in extenuating circumstances. Police spokeswoman Monique Cotton said the department didn’t have any information about why the officer’s body camera was not turned on.

Spokane crime up in 2013, FBI says

Spokane’s property and violent crime rates rose last year compared with 2012, bucking national and statewide trends, according to crime data released Monday by the FBI. A Spokane city resident had a 1 in 11 chance of becoming a victim of burglary, larceny or motor-vehicle theft in 2013. For the average Washingtonian, that number was 1 in 27; for an American, it was 1 in 37.

Symposium on tested, creative justice reform aims to maintain local momentum

Most communities would jump at a chance to reduce crime while keeping more people out of jail. Julian Adler is coming to Spokane to show them how it’s done. Adler is one of two keynote speakers at Spokane’s upcoming Smart Justice Spokane Community Symposium on Nov. 15 at the Gonzaga University School of Law. The symposium, organized by a coalition of local advocacy and community groups, will bring people together to talk about addressing root causes of crime and continuing to implement reforms in law enforcement.

Taco Del Mar owner won’t face charges

Assault and burglary charges against a Spokane restaurant owner were dismissed three days before the case was set to go to trial. Manjinder “Matt” Rai, 30, was accused in June of assaulting an employee who worked at the Taco Del Mar he owns. Natalie Lemery said Rai entered her residence, threw her against the wall, pushed her down on a futon and choked her on the night of June 2.

Spokane Valley brothers were executed, authorities say

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said the victims of a double homicide Saturday were executed in a “gruesome crime.” Brothers Arturo Gallegos and Juan Gallegos-Rodriguez were killed at the Broadway Square Apartments in Spokane Valley, where they shared a unit. Gallegos-Rodriguez, 44, died from multiple gunshot wounds, and Gallegos, 53, died from a gunshot wound to the head and neck.

Police must now leave cameras on

In response to public feedback, Spokane police officers outfitted with body cameras will record every incident they respond to for the next month of the department’s pilot program. Spokane police Chief Frank Straub announced the change, which will become effective Saturday, at a community forum at Gonzaga University’s Cataldo Hall Thursday night. He said the shift is in line with other police departments and the desires of Spokane residents.

Woman arrested in Browne’s Addition stabbing death

Police arrested Chrystal L. Huff in her boyfriend’s apartment early Wednesday morning after authorities said she skipped an interview about her alleged role in a grisly Browne’s Addition killing. Police identified her Tuesday as a suspect in the September death of Richard W. Whipple and asked the public’s help to find her.

97-year-old Spokane woman dies in house fire

A 97-year-old woman died in a house fire on Spokane’s North Side early Tuesday morning. Neighbors identified her as Olga Ford and said she was a longtime neighborhood resident. She lived with her son, Trevor Ford, who was able to escape the house, 1227 E. Longfellow Ave., with minor injuries.

Child-luring suspect accused of preying on prostitutes

Sheriff’s deputies believe a man arrested last week in connection with a kidnapping and several child-luring incidents may have also been preying on prostitutes. Konstantin A. Sergienko has been charged with a second count of kidnapping after another alleged victim came forward.

Fatally injured pedestrian had been drinking with driver, police say

The driver arrested Wednesday for allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 2 had been drinking with the victim at a local bar prior to the collision, according to a police report. Orlan W. Knuth, 35, was arrested following the Wednesday morning collision that killed Joshua B. Lee, 31, as Lee was walking down the paved shoulder of Highway 2 north of Nevada Street.
