Deputy hurt in fight with escapee
An escapee from Eastern State Hospital was found west of Spokane Saturday afternoon and brought to the Spokane County Jail, where he attacked and injured a sheriff’s deputy, according to sheriff’s officials.
Phillip A. Paul, 29, was booked into the jail on charges of first-degree escape and second-degree assault.
Paul had been cooperative with deputies who captured him but became violent once he reached the jail shortly after noon, officials said. Paul allegedly attacked Deputy Roger Knight, hitting him in the head as both men wrestled to the ground.

Knight hit his head and shoulder on the floor, but was not seriously injured. He was treated at the jail by paramedics.
Paul had apparently walked away from Eastern sometime around midnight, a sheriff’s press release said.
