Hundreds Killed In Afghan Landslide

Compiled From Wire Services

A landslide in a remote corner of northeastern Afghanistan buried a small village, killing at least 350 people and injuring 69 others, Radio Kabul reported Saturday.

The landslide apparently occurred about a week ago, but authorities in the Afghan capital of Kabul, about 600 miles away, were not notified until Friday, the report said.

Rescue teams were trying to dig bodies from beneath the rubble in the Pamir mountain range.

The state-run radio blamed the landslide on heavy rains that pounded northeastern Afghanistan for much of the past two weeks.

Afghanistan’s remote mountain regions are regularly battered by earthquakes and landslides.
