Poster Contest Winners Announced By Deaconess

The annual Poison Prevention Poster Contest was held and sponsored by the Deaconess Poison Prevention and Education Center. The theme for this year is, “Children act fast, so do poisons.” A total of 24 winners were chosen and 12 will have their posters displayed on billboards around the Spokane area. The other 12 will receive gift certificates from Toys ‘R’ Us.

Billboard Winners:

3rd Grade: Ronae Peacock and Marc Ungaro, both of Adams Elementary; Tracy Mitchell, Ponderosa Elementary and Natalie Skaer, Roosevelt Elementary.

4th Grade: Ryan Heacock, and Brittany Broyles, both of Sunrise Elementary; Jacoy Snizik, Trentwood Elementary; and Kyle Kiesel, Ridgeview Elementary.

5th Grade: Michael Allen, University Elementary; Mary Beth Gaddy, Hutton Elementary; Joshua Leyk, Sunrise Elementary; and Raymond Kenyon, Arcadia Elementary (Deer Park).

Toys ‘R’ Us Winners:

3rd Grade: Olivia Kintzele and Arick Olson, both of Hamblen Elementary; Anna Hawkins, University Elementary; and Julia Leach, Roosevelt Elementary.

4th Grade: Joel Stewart, Medical Lake Elementary; Chelsea Little, and Adam Reugh, both of Hamblen Elementary; and Dylan Lodge, Westview Elementary.

5th Grade: Dustin Weisgerber, Arcadia Elementary; Jenna Allen, Betz Elementary; Jillian Greene, Medical Lake Elementary; and Kaleigh Knuth, Sunrise Elementary.

The Gonzaga Preparatory School Debate Team earned first place in the debate sweepstakes at the Pacific Lutheran University High School Debate Tournament, held recently in Tacoma. G-Prep earned more trophies in cross examination and Lincoln-Douglas debate than any other of the more than 60 secondary schools participating in the tournament.

Individuals earning awards included: Darren Meekin and Carolyn Salina, first place in junior-varsity cross examination; Beth Wierman and Angela Rogers, second in novice cross examination; Ted Carroll and Mike Gill, fifth place in junior varsity cross examination; and Missy Longshore and Kari Carlin, fifth place in varsity cross examination.

Students earning speaker awards were Beth Wierman, first speaker, novice cross examination debate; Angela Rogers, third speaker, novice cross examination; Carolyn Salina, first speaker, junior-varsity cross examination; and Darrin Meekin, fourth speaker, junior-varsity cross examination.

In individual events, Beth Carey set a Prep debate record by making it into finals in four events. She received first in humorous interpretation, third in dramatic interpretation, fourth in interpretive reading and fourth in dual interpretation along with Angela Rogers.

Three other Prep students earned trophies in individual events: Sarah Stucky, first in impromptu and fourth in extemporaneous; Beth Wierman, second in impromptu; and Missy Longshore, fourth in extemporaneous.
