Defending champion Dionicio Ceron of Mexico overcame a gamble by longtime leader Antonio Pinto and shrugged off a challenge from Steve Moneghetti to become the first man to win the London Marathon twice.

Ceron finished in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 30 seconds, with Moneghetti, the 1989 runner-up from Australia, 3 seconds behind. Portugal’s Pinto, the 1992 winner, was third at 2:08:48.

In the women’s race, Poland’s Malgorzata Sobanska ended Katrin Dorre’s three-year reign as champion by winning at 2:27:43.

Dorre, of Germany, placed seventh, behind Spokane’s Kim Jones, the early race leader who wound up sixth in 2:31:35.
