Martinez Defends Title

Conchita Martinez wrapped up her first title of the year in efficient and effective fashion, whipping Magdalena Maleeva 6-1, 6-1 in 58 minutes to win her second straight Family Circle Cup in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Martinez, who at times played ragged tennis, was rarely challenged by Maleeva, who lost each of her seven service games.

In Palermo, Sicily, Andre Agassi, the world’s No. 2 player, was reported to be suffering from “lower back strain” and withdrew from his Davis Cup singles match in favor of Jared Palmer.

Sampras won his match against Andrea Gaudenzi 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, and Palmer defeated Renzo Furlan 6-4, 6-3 to complete the U.S. victory, which had been clinched Saturday.
