Whitworth Lecture Series Deals With Issues Of War, Cultural Effects

Whitworth College will be presenting “A Tapestry: Literary, Musical, and Theatrical Experiences Reflecting on Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem,” a six-part lecture, drama and music series dealing with the issue of war and its cultural effects, beginning on Monday at 7 p.m. with the lecture “Wilfred Owen and the Poetry of War” by English professor Leonard Oakland.

All lectures will be held Mondays at Whitworth College Music Recital Hall at 7 p.m. They are free.

Other lectures include:

April 17 - “Benjamin Britten and the Choral Revival in England” by music professor Randi Von Ellefson.

April 24 - “A Preview of the War Requiem” by Von Ellefson.

May 1 - “Heroes, Heroics and ‘Not About Heroes”’ by theatre professors Rick Hornor and Diana Trotter.

“A Tapestry” will also include two performances of “Not About Heroes,” a play by British playwright Stephen MacDonald.

The performances are May 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. at Whitworth College’s Cowles Auditorium.

“Not About Heroes” is a true account of the meeting of two injured soldiers, poet Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, in a hospital during World War I.

Tickets for the play are $5, $4 for students with ID and are available at G&B outlets.

On May 12, the series will conclude at the Spokane Opera House at 8 p.m. with the Spokane Symphony performing Britten’s “War Requiem” in its entirety. Tickets are $25, $21, $16 and $11 and are available at G&B.
