Pge Shareholders To Pay N-Plant Bill

From Staff And Wire Reports

Portland General Corp. shareholders, not ratepayers, will pick up a $36.7 million bill for closing the Trojan nuclear plant.

The Oregon Public Utility Commission told the company last week it could not recover from ratepayers about 13 percent of its investment in Trojan, which was closed in January 1993.

Portland General and its wholly owned subsidiary, Portland General Electric, serve 637,000 retail customers in northwest Oregon, as well as wholesale customers.

PGE said it would record the $36.7 million charge against firstquarter earnings, which are expected to be reported in late April. PGE earned $39 million in the comparable quarter of 1994.
