K&K; Fish Derby Goes Conservative

Fishing

The Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s K&K Challenge Derby has adopted the theme of “catch and release” for its spring fishing derby May 1-7.

To promote conservation of Lake Pend Oreille’s world-class trophy trout fisheries, derby organizers are allowing participants to enter only one rainbow for the entire derby. The club also has eliminated daily prizes. Instead, it offers 10 prizes in the rainbow division at the end of the derby.

Anglers who catch and release a rainbow over 20 pounds will be awarded a special pin and enter a group to which the club is attaching increasing prestige.

Grand prize for the largest rainbow caught is an 18-foot boat with 90 horse outboard and trailer. Numerous other prizes and cash awards are available.

Derby registrations can be purchased at more than 30 locations throughout North Idaho and Spokane.Since the May 1 trout season on Lake Pend Oreille opens on a Monday this year, the derby will include only one weekend.
