Newt Hammers Away On A Different House

Compiled From Wire Services

The House speaker can build them, too.

Newt Gingrich grabbed a hammer and nailed siding to the wooden frame of a single-story home as part of a program to provide housing for low-income families.

The Georgia Republican, who helped break ground for the house last month, joked about his lack of construction prowess.

“I consider myself a history professor who reads books,” he said, sporting a Habitat for Humanity T-shirt.

About sixty people began working in the morning on the house, about 20 miles from Atlanta. By 2 p.m., when Gingrich arrived, a concrete foundation was down, the wooden frame was up and volunteers were attaching shingles to the roof.
