Beavers Best Cougs To Earn Pac-10 Split

David Schmidt’s eighth-inning solo home run earned Oregon State a 5-4 victory over Washington State in the second game as the teams split a Pac-10 North baseball doubleheader Monday.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Oregon State (5-5 Pac-10 North, 15-13-1 overall).

Washington State (5-3, 13-17) won the seven-inning opener 5-4.

Kevin Hooker had a two-run double and Matt Bailie added an RBI single as Oregon State collected three runs in the seventh inning of the second contest after trailing 3-1. Tom Cody’s sacrifice fly for WSU tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth.

The Cougars won the first game in the seventh inning on Rob Ryan’s RBI double and Mike Kink’s run-scoring single.

Don O’Neal drove in three runs and Cale Smith smacked a solo home run as the Pirates stopped the visiting Bearcats at Merkel Field.

The teams split two Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges games on Sunday.

O’Neal had a sacrifice fly in a two-run first inning for the Pirates (2-1 NCIC, 8-9-1 overall) and capped the scoring with a two-run single in the seventh. Sean Peterson drove in two runs, with a single and sacrifice fly.

In the opener, Doug Clark had a squeeze bunt that scored two runs in the third inning C.J. Alvin a two-run homer in the fourth.

Bryan Miller, 5-for-8 in the two games with four doubles, had two RBI doubles in the second game to highlight a 17-hit attack.
