Rich Get Richer As Mead, G-Prep Remain Unbeaten

GSL soccer

Unbeatens Mead and Gonzaga Prep remained that way, while at the same time opening more ground on their pursuers in Greater Spokane League boys soccer on Monday.

Jim Morton scored twice and keeper Rich Cullen closed the door after yielding an early goal as Mead (8-0) notched a 4-1 come-from-behind win over visiting North Central.

NC, which came into the match tied for third place, slipped to 4-3 and into fourth behind University (4-2), which shut out Rogers 4-0 as keeper Richie Bernal needed to make just one save.

Chad Zlateff scored twice as G-Prep (7-0) stayed on Mead’s tail with a 4-1 win over Shadle Park (4-3) that kept the Highlanders from vaulting into third place.

In the other match, Lewis and Clark (3-3) made Jeremiah Jenz’ goal at the 25-minute mark stand up for a 1-0 victory over Central Valley (2-6).

CV had a 2-on-1 break against LC keeper James Malone with 10 minutes to play, but the Bears shot wide.

Paul Johnson got NC off to a 1-0 start 11-minutes into the match against Mead, but Ben Brodsky drew the Panthers even at the 22-minute mark.

Mead dominated the second half, with Morton sandwiching his two goals around one by Ken Moulaison. The Panthers outshot the Indians 18-5.

Junior Ryan Vane scored for Shadle to get the Highlanders a 1-1 tie at the 10-minute mark after Zlateff had put G-Prep up 90 seconds earlier. Ben Lambert capped the scoring for G-Prep at the 66-minute mark.

U-Hi got scoring from four individuals - Ryan Kirkingburg, Josh Melcher, Jason Daniel and Randy Aitken - in dominating Rogers (0-9). The Titans led 3-0 at the half.

After John Harnateux set up Jenz for LC’s goal, the Tigers and Bears battled evenly. LC had just a 7-5 margin in shots with Malone and CV’s Derrick Adams matching big saves.
