The transportation director for this vast city died of a gunshot wound in his office on Monday, two days after announcing that the city’s largest bus system was being shut down.
Police said they do not know whether Luis Miguel Moreno Gomez, 54, was murdered or committed suicide.
Moreno was one of the city officials who announced Saturday the bankruptcy of the city’s crucial Route 100 bus company. Its 2,800 buses carried about 2.8 million passengers a day.
Police have arrested at least five officials and advisers of the drivers union which, together with the city government, runs the company. City Comptroller Hector Manuel Valenzuela said Monday that fraud at the company over the past two years had reached about $8 million.
