War Crimes Tribunal Gets Serb Documents

Compiled From Wire Services

Documents purporting to link senior Serbian intelligence officials to atrocities in the former Yugoslavia have been smuggled out of the country and presented to a war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

If genuine, the documents handed over by an ex-Serb intelligence officer could help buttress a case against the Serbian officials or even President Slobodan Milosevic, a well-placed Clinton administration official told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

“We’ve seen copies of some; the guy is clearly in a position to know,” said the official in providing some details but not the identity of the former intelligence worker who “is on the lam” in Western Europe and was brought to the tribunal in The Hague by Dutch authorities.

As for the Serbian leader himself, “We’re not sure his fingerprints are in the documents,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
