Handle Players Gain All-State

Three North Idaho boys basketball players have been named to All-State first teams, The Idaho Statesman newspaper in Boise announced Sunday.

Lake City 6-foot-3 senior post Brian Russell was picked to the A-1 first team, while Intermountain League senior standouts Travis Fulton, a 6-2 point guard from Kellogg, and Gavin Glindeman, a 6-4 wingpost from Bonners Ferry, were named to the A-2 first team.

Russell was joined on the A-1 team by 6-5 junior post Jon Harris of Centennial, 6-10 senior post J.T. Nelson of Pocatello, 6-0 senior guard Brandon Andrew and 6-1 senior guard Ty Shippen, both of Rigby.

Harris was named A-1 player of the year. He led Centennial, which was making its first trip to state in eight years, to the state championship and a 26-0 record. Centennial coach Tom Aipperspach was named coach of the year.

Fulton and Glindeman, meanwhile, were joined on the A-2 team by 6-2 senior forward Danny Walker of Weiser, 6-2 senior guard Trent Whiting of Kuna and 5-10 senior guard Jeremy Ramos of Payette.

Walker was named player of the year as he led Weiser to the state title. Weiser coach Lyle Bayley was named coach of the year.

LC’s Russell had a year stamped with adversity.

Before the year started, Russell had to hire an attorney and fight for eligibility after transferring from Coeur d’Alene to Lake City. After battling early season injuries, Russell broke two bones in his left hand late in the year.

Russell played through the injuries and probably played his best with the broken hand.

Named the Inland Empire League most valuable player by the coaches, Russell averaged 18.6 points and 9.8 rebounds.

Fulton and Glindeman were key reasons why their teams shared a league championship and advanced to state, eventually meeting in the consolation final (Kellogg won 87-85 in double overtime).

Fulton averaged a team-leading 16.6 points and added 5.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. Glindeman led Bonners Ferry with 18.1 ppg and 6.3 rpg.

The all-state teams are selected by the coaches.
