Tulsa Hires Hoops Coach

Tulsa tapped another major-college basketball program, naming Kansas assistant Steve Robinson as its coach.

Robinson, in his first head coaching job at any level, takes over a program that has won back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference titles and has reached the Sweet 16 the past two years.

That, he said, made the offer all the more enticing.

“I wanted to come into a program that already has a winning tradition,” said Robinson. “I believe you can continue those winning ways a little easier than trying to change the attitude of people who don’t care about their basketball program.”

Tulsa, which first flourished under Nolan Richardson in the early 1980s, hired Tubby Smith, the top assistant under Rick Pitino at Kentucky, four years ago.

Smith left two weeks ago to replace Hugh Durham at Georgia.

Robinson, 37, has spent the past seven years under Roy Williams at Kansas.

The University of Delaware hired former Duke University assistant coach Mike Brey to take over the head coaching job of its men’s basketball program.

Brey, 36, succeeds Steve Steinwedel, who announced his resignation March 7 after leading Delaware to a record of 163-121, two North Atlantic Conference titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances over 10 seasons.

Brey is a native of Rockville, Md., and a 1982 graduate of George Washington University.
