Fishing Boat Driven Aground, 9 Drown

A fishing boat was driven onto rocks in rough seas off the Pacific coast, drowning nine crewmen and leaving seven others missing, police said Thursday.

The Canete II, which was fishing for anchovies, was lost off Las Salinas beaches, 70 miles northwest of Lima, police said. The boat left Lima’s neighboring port of Callao a week ago.
