Senate Approves Bill Limiting Kids’ Tattoos
Unscrupulous tattooists who perform their craft on children could find themselves in trouble with the law under a bill sent to Gov. Mike Lowry on Monday.
The Senate voted, 43-1, to approve SB5190, which would make it a misdemeanor to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 without parental consent.
Supporters of the measure say children are not mature enough to make such a permanent decision.
They also say some tattoo artists work in unsanitary conditions which spread disease.
The original bill, sponsored by Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, would have made it a crime to tattoo anyone under the age of 16.
House members amended the bill and the Senate accepted the change.
