Wayne Vezzetti, in his first start for Washington State, allowed four hits and two runs in seven innings, while Mike Kinkade belted a two-run home run to pace the Cougars past Lewis-Clark State 3-2 Tuesday evening at Bailey Field in Pullman.
A junior, Vezzetti (1-0) walked just two batters before Justin Marquart relieved for the final two innings.
Marquart picked up the save for the Cougars (18-21). Jake Wayt (4-1) went the distance for the Warriors (37-10), giving up just five hits.
CCS baseball
James Kwong (3-1) struck out 10 as Community Colleges of Spokane beat Walla Walla 6-2 for its 10th straight win, but the visiting Sasquatch fell 3-2 in the nightcap of the NWAACC doubleheader.
Walla Walla’s Paco Crandall, a Gonzaga Prep grad, was 1 for 2 in the opener, 2 for 4 in the second game.
CCS softball
Deanna Fountain outpitched cousin Katrina Fountain as Spokane beat Walla Walla 6-3 in the opener of an NWAACC doubleheader.
Julie Fountain, Deanna’s younger sister, picked up the win in Spokane’s 12-0 nightcap rout. Tanya Palmer’s two second-inning RBIs sparked the Sasquatch (8-0, 9-5) in the opener. Juline Parry added a two-run homer in the second game.
