Lake City Stays Undefeated Unbeaten Streak At 10

Lake City turned its play up a notch in the second half of Tuesday’s high school boys soccer game at Hayden Meadows Elementary School.

The Timberwolves outshot Coeur d’Alene 17-6 in that half en route to a 2-0 victory.

“They’re a lot better team than they were the first time,” Lake City junior Mike Thorpe said of the Vikings.

Lake City held a slim two-shot advantage over Coeur d’Alene at halftime and guarded a 1-0 lead.

Senior midfielder Robin Bundy was true on his third scoring attempt, a 20-yarder over the right side off a feed from Mike Thompson 5 minutes into the game.

But the Timberwolves were relatively silent in the last 12 minutes of the first half, taking just three shots, including a left-footed attempt from 10 yards by Bundy which Vikings goalkeeper David Scammell dove at to save.

Lake City got a break at the 33-minute mark when Vikings senior Brett Fink’s shot went wide left by a couple of inches.

“The first half was bang, bang soccer,” Coeur d’Alene coach David Tabakman said. “They were tough; we were tough. They were ready; we were ready.”

The Vikings lost Scammell to a head injury when he collided with Thorpe 18 minutes into the second half, delaying the game about 20 minutes.

“It was a 50-50 ball,” Thorpe explained of the accident. “I was shooting. (Scammell) dove headfirst, which is really unusual for a keeper. He collided with my knee.”

Scammell, who had nine saves, was transported by ambulance to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was treated for a concussion and later released.

“They called a foul on (Thorpe), but didn’t give him a yellow card,” Tabakman said. “It’s up to the referee to protect the players.”

Five minutes after play resumed, Thorpe scored for Lake City.Coeur d’Alene managed just two shots in the first 30 minutes of the second half, before unleashing a barrage of six shots in the last 5 minutes.

Vikings’ sophomore Darren Baune’s 30-yard attempt was a narrow miss at 78 minutes, and Lake City’s Ean Estep headed a shot out of the Timberwolves’ goal in the last 30 seconds to save the shutout.

“Just due to depth, every second half we pretty much take apart every team we’ve played,” Lake City coach Bill Eisenwinter said.

“We’ve gotten better in every game we’ve played,” Tabakman said. “I’m very pleased with the way our younger people played. We played right with (the Timberwolves).”
