Wilkens To Coach Olympians

Associated Press

Lenny Wilkens of the Atlanta Hawks, the winningest coach in NBA history, has been chosen to coach the U.S. men’s basketball team at the 1996 Olympics, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.

The newspaper said the vote was made by USA Basketball’s selection committee during a meeting at a Phoenix-area hotel. The announcement will be made next week.

There has been considerable speculation that Wilkens, who this season surpassed Red Auerbach as the winningest NBA coach, would be chosen for the Atlanta Games.

Hurley sidelined

Sacramento Sacramento Kings guard Bobby Hurley was placed on the injured list and is expected to be replaced by Derrick Phelps for the last three games of the regular season. Hurley strained his lower back during pregame warm-ups Tuesday night in Phoenix.
