Tip Proves Correct When Body Found

From Staff And Wire Reports

More than a month ago, authorities dismissed a tip that Regina Krieger’s body was near Minidoka Dam on the Snake River.

Since then, 14-year-old Krieger’s body was found about six miles downstream from the dam last Saturday.

Investigators now are trying to track down the source of the anonymous report.

“We think whoever started the rumor knows something,” Cassia County Sheriff Billy Crystal said Friday. “It may have been someone trying to give us some kind of lead.”

One tip phoned in to the Cassia County dispatch on March 13 reported her body had been found near the dam, sheriff’s Lt. Jim Higens said.

Cassia County contacted Minidoka County to ask if a body had been discovered, he said.

Minidoka County Sheriff Paul Fries said he heard the same rumor from a newspaper reporter. Police did not follow up on it.

“There wasn’t a person calling saying, I saw a body and I know where it’s at,” Crystal said.

Krieger was found with her throat cut and a stab wound in the heart. She had been missing for seven weeks after disappearing from her Burley home on Feb. 28, leaving a spotty trail of blood from her bedroom to a fence in the backyard.
