Amateur Leads Pro-Am Field

Amateur Darrell Sherman and some tricky greens shared the spotlight in The Highlands stop of the Washington Trust Bank Pro-Am on Monday.

Sherman, who plays out of Downriver, offset one bogey with six birdies for a 5-under-par 67 and three-shot victory over two pros and a trio of amateurs on a day when most of the golfers found it difficult to drop a putt.

Dan Porter of Downriver and senior Hal Merian of Pine Acres led the pros with 2-under 70s. That was a stroke better than the quintet of Jerry Zink, The Fairways; Bill Sproule, Okanogan; Tim Morton, Avondale; Larry Becker, Wandermere; and Stephanie Davis, Hayden Lake.

Like Merian, Becker is a senior. Davis had a two-shot advantage over Patti Marquis of Painted Hills in the women’s pro division.

Amateurs behind Sherman were Pete Caruso, Indian Canyon; Jim Jensen, The Fairways; and Kent Brown, Liberty Lake, at 70.

Net leaders in the 0-8 amateur handicap division were Darrell Brown, Lewiston, and Phil Hauck, Wandermere, with 67s.

Shumway Poole of Avondale led the senior amateurs with a 71.

Next week’s WTB Pro-Am is at The Fairways.
