Colombian Soap Opera Star Denies Drug Link

TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 1995

The star of a popular soap opera which has been praised for not mentioning drugs or violence criticized prosecutors Monday for publicly linking her to a drug investigation.

The attorney general’s office said Friday that Margarita Rosa de Francisco, star of “Cafe,” was wanted for questioning because a company allegedly owned by the Cali cocaine cartel had paid her hotel bill during a performance last year.

De Francisco said prosecutors have not contacted her, but she said she would answer their questions if they do.

“My representatives tell me to do a performance and I do it; I have no idea if (a sponsor) is a front man,” said de Francisco.

Her manager said she couldn’t be expected to investigate the sponsor of every show.
