Leslie Maley Thornton, Wash.

Family graveside service for Leslie William Maley, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rosalia (Wash.) International Order of Odd Fellows Evergreen Cemetery followed by memorial services at 11 a.m. at Rosalia United Methodist Church. Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Rosalia, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Maley, who was born in Rosalia, died Saturday at the Tekoa (Wash.) Care Center.

He farmed from 1936 until he retired at the age of 85.

His memberships included Rosalia United Methodist Church, the Steptoe Grange, the Rosalia Masonic Lodge No. 84, the Rosalia International Order of Odd Fellows No.110, the Relief Rebecca Lodge No. 98, the Malden Order of the Eastern Star No. 149, the El Katif Temple, Spokane, the Scottish Rite and the Whitman County Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Olga Maley; one son, Wayne Maley, and one daughter, Susan Maley, both of Spokane; two stepdaughters, Sandy Riddlington of Corvallis, Ore., and Georgia Frick of Rosalia; nine grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Bedell ‘Slim’ Veldez St. Maries

No service will be held for Bedell “Slim” Veldez, at his request. YatesHodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Veldez, 88, died Monday.

He was born in Hays, Kan., and traveled the rodeo circuit and did ranch work as a young man.

He and his wife, Irene, lived in Salmon, Idaho, after they were married in 1930. He worked as a carpenter.

He lived in Provo, Utah, and Auburn, Wash., before moving to St. Maries in 1993.

He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Lon Veldez of Rochester, Wash.; one daughter, Nita Schmidt of Colville, Wash.; two brothers, Forest Cable of Reno, Nev., and Raymond Cable of Seattle; one sister, Gladys Lish of Seattle; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

David Anderson Spokane

Memorial service for David Anderson, 76, is planned for 7 p.m. Friday at Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall, 1802 N. Raymond. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Garland, Wyo., Mr. Anderson died Saturday.

He had lived in Spokane for 53 years and worked at Armour Meat Plant. He was also a self-employed finish carpenter.

He belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ University Congregation.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Margaret; two sons, Randy Anderson of Spokane and David Anderson of Everett; one daughter, Cindy Nelson of Chico, Calif.; one sister, Mary Kukuk of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

W.D. ‘Bill’ Reeves Spokane

Private service was held for W.D. “Bill” Reeves.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Mr. Reeves, 83, died Thursday.

He had lived in Spokane for 37 years.

Mr. Reeves retired in 1976, after 47 years with the Canadian Pacific Railway.

He was a charter member of the Spokane Transportation Club.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary “Maim” Reeves; one son, W.W. “Bill” Reeves; one daughter, Janice Christian; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Bill Davis Hayden Lake, Idaho

No service will be held for Bill J. Davis, 78, at his request. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Davis, who was born in Windsor, Colo., died April 18 at Sunset Terrace Nursing Home, Coeur d’Alene.

In 1943 he and his wife, Esther, moved from Wyoming to Seattle, where he worked for Boeing.

In 1947 they moved to Spokane. He worked for Kaiser Aluminum for 30 years as a machinist before retiring in 1978.

He was an instructor for the National Rifle Association and was a gardener, hunter and fisherman.

He spent most of his retirement in North Idaho.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years; one son, Marvin Davis of Rathdrum, Idaho; two daughters, Sharon Aune of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Jean Bierwagon of Dallas; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mary McNearney Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Burial Mass for Mary (Wendel) Chisholm McNearney, 78, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bonners Ferry. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery, Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McNearney, who died Saturday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, was born in Bonners Ferry.

She and her husband, Hugh Chisholm, started the Chisholm Cedar Co., in 1944. He died in 1954 and she continued to operate the business until 1962.

Mrs. McNearney also owned and operated the Corner Cafe, where the Boardwalk Boutique is now located.

In 1955, she married Charles McNearney. He was killed in a plane crash in 1956.

She was secretary-treasurer of Kokanee Cedar Sales in Naples, Idaho, from 1962 until she retired in 1982. After her retirement she worked at Bargain Giant for several years and also for John Divorske.

She served on the Boundary County Hospital Board for 20 years and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary.

The Chamber of Commerce will present an achievement award for her community involvement at its upcoming banquet.

She was active in several bridge and pinochle clubs. She was a fisherman and gardener and landscaped her own home.

She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Poston, one granddaughter, and one sister, Frances Mace, all of Bonners Ferry; and two brothers, Albert Wendel of Bonners Ferry and Arthur Wendel of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bonner County Community Hospital.

Olive Bache Spokane

Graveside service for Olive B. Bache, 96, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at International Order of Odd Fellows Wayside Cemetery in Deer Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bache, who was born in Milan, Wash., died Sunday in Walla Walla, where she had lived for the past 12 years.

She formerly lived in Spokane and worked for The Crescent from 1930-50.

In Spokane she had been involved with the Rebekah Lodge, the International Order of Odd Fellows and Broadway Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Roger “Bud” Chapin of Hemet, Calif.; two daughters, Marjorie Olson of Big Springs, Texas, and Virginia Franz of Spokane; two brothers, Basil Mason of Spokane and Edward Mason of Seattle; two sisters, Gladys Reid of Walla Walla and Anna Mason of Hayden, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the International Order of Odd Fellows.

John Schuler Spokane

Graveside service for John J. Schuler, 68, will be at 1 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schuler, who died April 16, was born in Spokane.

He graduated from Rogers High School and received a degree in education from Whitworth College.

He began teaching in Hay, Wash., and moved back to Spokane to teach elementary school in Spokane School District 81 in 1956. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the East Camp of Gideons International and the Spokane Radio Amateurs.

He is survived by two aunts.

Jessie Fried Spokane

Graveside service for Jessie Fried, 82, is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fried, who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, died Sunday. She moved to Spokane 47 years ago and worked as a bookkeeper from the 1950s until she retired in 1972.

She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Otto Fried, at the home; three sons, Leslie and David Fried, both of Spokane, and Bill Fried of Fairbanks, Alaska; two brothers; one sister; six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Ruth Tobey Spokane

Graveside service for Ruth A. Tobey, 101, is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tobey died Saturday.

She was born in St. John, N.D., and moved to Spokane from Post Falls in 1914.

She was a homemaker and had been a railroad telegraph operator during World War II.

She is survived by one son, Charles Tobey of Spokane; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Leo Kulzer Valley, Wash.

Vigil service for Leo William Kulzer, 85, will be at 7 p.m. today at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah, Wash. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Valley, with burial at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Jump Off Joe, Wash.

Mr. Kulzer, who died Sunday, was born in Valley.

He worked at Kulzer’s Store in Valley from 1933 until he retired in 1977.

He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 54 and the Elks Lodge No. 1753.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Hazel Kulzer; one son, Mike Kulzer of Valley; one daughter, Mary Sue Hastings of Spokane; one brother, George Kulzer of Valley; two sisters, Irene Cook and Katherine King, both of Spokane; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

Harry Abell Los Angeles

Graveside service for Harry Martin Abell, retired Air Force colonel, will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Service was held Tuesday in Northridge, Calif.

Mr. Abell, who was born in San Diego, died Thursday.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served during World War II as a B-17F pilot attached to the 15th Air Force, 2nd Bombardment Group. He received the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and the Soldiers Medal for heroism in rescuing other crew members.

After he retired from the military in 1964, he became a corporate pilot in California.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Leone; one son, Martin; one daughter, Martha; two sisters, Barbara and Patricia; and four grandchildren.

William Purcell Jr. Plummer, Idaho

Rosary service for William L. “Bill” Purcell Jr., 38, is planned for 7 p.m. today at the Worley (Idaho) Community Center. Burial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Worley Community Center. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in DeSmet, Idaho. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Purcell was born in Spokane. He died Monday in Grand Coulee from kidney failure. He had moved to Grand Coulee last week.

He grew up in Rockford and graduated from high school in Tekoa, Wash.

He worked for General Telephone and Electric in Tekoa and later worked on the construction of Coeur d’Alene tribal housing. He had also worked in construction at the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana.

He enjoyed shooting pool, basketball and dancing.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Mission Catholic Church and the Coeur d’Alene Indian Tribe.

He is survived by one son, Matthew Purcell of California; two daughters, Susan and Sarah Purcell, both of Tekoa; and one sister, Rose Gonzales of DeSmet.

Ruth Brophy Spokane

Funeral Mass for Ruth P. Brophy, 90, is set for 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, where she was a member. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brophy, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday. She graduated from North Central High School, and was a homemaker and a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society.

Her husband, John, died in 1987. She is survived by three sons, James Brophy of Spokane, Paul Brophy of Phoenix, and Michael Brophy of Latah; three daughters, Patricia Frauchiger, Colleen Miller and Frances Bohlman, all of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

John Westensee Spokane

Memorial service for John I. Westensee, 54, is planned for 11 a.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 29th and Perry Ward. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Westensee, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

He attended Lewis and Clark High School and served in the Army National Guard. He worked for Pacific Hide and Fur for 31 years.

His wife, Ann, died in January.

Survivors include his father, John Westensee Sr., Spokane; two daughters, Cynthia Riggs and Shannon Martin, and one son, Jeff Westensee, all of Spokane; two sisters, Donna Johnson and Betty Hendrickson, and one brother, Dennis Westensee, all of Spokane; and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Albert Rasmussen Spangle

Service for Albert Rasmussen, 82, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Upper Columbia Academy in Spangle. Burial will be at the Spangle Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Rockford, Mr. Rasmussen died Saturday.

He farmed in the Spangle area from 1938 until 1994.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Laura Rasmussen; three daughters, Lou Ellen Sample of Weimar, Calif., and Jewell Phillips of MiltonFreewater, Ore., and Ethel Conner of Shiocton, Wis.; one son, Donald Rasmussen of Spangle; one sister, Ellen Lowry of Rosalia, Wash.; five brothers, George and Carl, both of Spangle, Elmer of Centralia, Wash., Lester of College Place, Wash., and Norman of Ava, Mo.; and 13 grandchildren.
