Knights’ Scoring Machine Leaves Track Marks On Wv

For the third week in a row, East Valley scored more than 100 points in a Frontier League track meet, and co-coach Dave McCarty remains mystified with the ease of his team’s victories.

“I scored the meets (before each outing) and they’ve never come out as lopsided as the final results,” he said.

On Thursday, the Knights (3-0) manhandled rival West Valley (1-2) 102-43, the largest margin of victory in their 28-year history, setting up their title showdown next week in Clarkston (2-0-1).

The Bantams edged visiting Pullman 73-72. In the league’s other meet, Cheney (1-1-1) whipped Colville (0-3) 95-45.

EV won 13 of 17 events, getting a school-record-tying 6-foot-8 high jump from Pat Ferguson, one of three wins for the Knight junior.

Fourth-year varsity performer Rob Shogren, asked to run the open 400, sizzled in 51.1 to whip defending district 800-meter champion Nic Kellams, and came back to lead a sweep of the 200 in 22.9.

Another fourth-year athlete, Mike Giblen, won both hurdles.

WV’s highlight was a last-throw 181-9 javelin victory by Mike Schroder against the league’s second-best, Aaron Wilkinson, who threw 178-0.

In a showdown of the area’s best triple jumpers, WV’s Terra Inman edged the Knights’ Star Olson, both with seasonal bests, 35-8 1/2 to 35-4 1/2.

The two jump stars were part of a meet that saw the Eagles (3-0) edge closer to a fourth straight league championship with an 85-56 win over previously unbeaten EV.

As expected, the Eagles had too much speed, sweeping the short sprints and winning all three relays. And Heather Harmon won the 800 and 1,600.

Knight Crystal Nicholson swept both hurdles.

Clarkston’s (1-2) depth carried it past Pullman (1-2) 86-54. Jennifer Rea was a triple distance winner and Jennifer Herbert won both hurdles for the Bantams.

Cheney (2-1) won in Colville (0-3), 85-56, behind sprinter Beth Madison, hurdler Shonta Dotts and distance runner Jeanette Zimmer, who won two events each.

Cheney’s 2-1 victory over host East Valley (6-3-1), thanks to the goalkeeping of Rod Just, locked up the Frontier League title for the Blackhawks (10-0-1).

Mike Kisslinger scored the game’s first goal and assisted Trevor Harelson on the winner at the 55-minute mark. Just made 11 saves.

West Valley, a 2-1 loser to visiting Sandpoint, controlled first-half play, taking 12 shots, but only had one score - by Quinn Sharpe.

Host Pullman routed Clarkston 11-0 as four players had two goals.
