Vernon Moland Liberty Lake

Service for Vernon M. Moland, 73, is set for 2 p.m. today, at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Moland was born in Park Rapids, Minn. He died Tuesday.

He moved with his family to Spokane in 1940 and attended Kinman Business University.

During World War II he served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corps and was a prisoner of war in Germany.

He was a certified public accountant in Spokane for 45 years with his son, Ken, and his brother, Veryl.

He was a member of the MeadowWood Men’s Club.

He is survived by two sons, Kenneth and Ronald Moland, both of Spokane; two stepsons, Mike Hollinsworth of Issaquah, Wash., and Steve Hollinsworth of Kent, Wash.; one stepdaughter, Marcia Van Kirk of Lynden, Wash.; three brothers, Veryl Moland, his twin, of Liberty Lake, Ellsworth Moland of Spokane and Einar Moland of Ballard, Wash.; one sister, Audry Reynolds of Cathlamet, Wash.; three grandsons; one granddaughter and three stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Velma Monson Spokane

Service for Velma L. Monson, 88, will be at 1 p.m. today at Christ Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Monson, a 45-year Spokane resident, died Monday.

She was born in Dover Township, Buffalo County, Wis.

She and her husband moved to Spokane in 1949.

She was a seamstress.

Her memberships included Greenacres Homemakers Club, and she was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Sigvald Monson, died in 1986.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Monson, and one son, Orlin Monson, both of Hayward, Calif.; one brother, LaVern Nyre of Mondovi, Wis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Christ Lutheran Church.

Marvin ‘Johnny’ Johnson Spokane

At his request, no service will be held for Marvin “Johnny” Johnson, 75. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, who died April 20, was born in Scoby, Mont.

A 25-year resident of the area, Mr. Johnson was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1474.

He is survived by one sister, Florence Stanton of Stanwood, Wash.; and his companion, Marcella Moss of Spokane.

Laura Sanders Cheney

Graveside service for Laura Ellen Nora Sanders, 77, will be at 10 a.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sanders, who was born in Bethel, Okla., died Tuesday.

She attended college in Durant, Okla., and was a school teacher for 30 years in Oklahoma, Montana and Idaho.

She worked at the Cheney Nursing Home for several years and retired from Lakeland Village in 1989.

Her husband, Luke Sanders, preceded her in death.

She is survived by seven children, Lorene Lee and Lanny Sanders, both of Spokane, Lynn Sanders of Missoula, Todd Sanders of Hot Springs, Mont., Leon and LaRoy “Red” Sanders, both of Cheney, and Lonnie Sanders of Quantico, Va.; three brothers, Carl and Dick Stovall of Bethel, Okla., and David Stovall of Prineville, Ore.; two sisters, Velma Edwards of Huntsville, Ala., and Bonnie LeForce of Broken Bow, Okla.; one grandson, 11 granddaughters, one greatgranddaughter and four greatgrandsons.

Loktha E. Lohman Spokane

Memorial service for Loktha E. Lohman, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lohman, who died Saturday, was born in Twisp, Wash.

He husband, Tabor Lohman, died in 1987.

During World War II, she worked in the naval shipyard in Bremerton.

She was a waitress at the Lucky Tavern and Cafe for many years. She was a 50-year Spokane resident.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice Tabor Rea of Spokane and Lyn Gulliford of Santee, Calif.; one brother, Gene Greenfield of Wenatchee; one sister, Glendalyn Jones of Lacey, Wash.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shadle Park Presbyterian Church Choir Fund.

Emogene Russell Olympia

Graveside service for Emogene Russell, 91, will be at 11 a.m. today at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Memorial service was held last Friday in Olympia.

Mrs. Russell, a former Spirit Lake resident, died April 18 in Olympia, where she had lived for the last 18 years.

She was born in South Haven, Kansas.

She had lived in Texas, Kansas and Arizona before she lived in Idaho.

Her husbands, Texas Taylor and Jack Russell, both preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Edith Peck of Bayview, Idaho; two sons, Ronald Taylor of Olympia and Dan Taylor of Roy, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren.

Donald Barden Spokane

Service for Donald B. Barden, 61, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be at 10 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Barden died Tuesday.

He graduated from Central Valley High School in 1951 and served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Barden had worked as a concrete contractor for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Shirley Barden; one daughter, Kim Falco of Lexington, Ky.; two sons, Jeff and Don Barden, both of Spokane; one stepson, Vic Jacobsen of Tri-Cities; one stepdaughter, Chris Hannawalt of Spokane; his mother, Lois Barden of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, LaVerne Barden and Phyllis Brown, both of Coeur d’Alene, and Karen Reynolds of Thompson Falls, Mont.; and eight grandchildren.

Hazel Wright Medical Lake

Graveside service for Hazel V. Wright, 89, is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at MacCabee Cemetery in Sprague, Wash. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Fishtrap, Wash., Mrs. Wright died Tuesday.

She had worked for 25 years as a dietician cook for Eastern State Hospital and retired in the late 1960s. She was also a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Medical Lake.

Her husband, Joseph, died in 1976.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris McLean of Spokane; one brother, Alvin Bogle of Tacoma; seven grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren and five great-greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Billy Graham Crusade.

Ernest Barksdale Spokane

Memorial service for Ernest L. Barksdale, 87, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Rockwood Manor Chapel. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Barksdale, a 45-year Spokane resident, died Monday.

He was born in Mitchell, Ind.

He had worked for F.S. Barrett and Co. Realtors and retired in 1982. He had previously worked for Phillips Petroleum.

His wife, Clara Barksdale, died in 1975.

He was a member of the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce, the Spokane Board of Realtors, the Oriental Masonic Lodge, the Manito Lions, the Moose Lodge and the Brotherhood of Friends.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Hartley of Pelham, Ala.; one half-brother, James Sauee of Mitchell, Ind.; two grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Allan Elder Spokane

Memorial service for Allan F. Elder, 89, is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Elder, who was born in Bent County, Colo., died Tuesday.

He had worked for Washington Water Power Co. for 44 years and retired in 1970.

He had lived in Spokane for more than 70 years.

Mr. Elder was a member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 96, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the El Katif Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters, the Legion of Honor Order of DeMolay, the Elks Lodge, the Gardeners of Spokane, the Washington Water Power Trailblazers, The Spokane Club, the International Executive Service Corps and the American Association of Retired Persons.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Karen Pribilsky of Walla Walla and Patricia Battan of Spokane; two sons, Frank and Irving Elder, both of Eatonville, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Arvella Minor Spokane

Service for Arvella Inez Minor, 97, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Minor, who died Wednesday, was born in Fairlee, Texas.

A charter member of Pines Baptist Church, she had lived in Spokane for 43 years. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, William Minor, died in 1969.

She is survived by four children, Vevia and Connie Haskins, and Adrian Minor, all of Spokane, and Ione Bay of Fresno, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 24 great-greatgrandchildren.
