Spokane Shadow To Play Sounders

Professional soccer returns to Spokane this weekend when the Seattle Sounders take on a local team Sunday at Central Valley High School.

The Sounders, who play in the seven-team North American league, and the Spokane Shadow begin play at 6 p.m.

The Shadow - comprised of former area high school and college players - will compete in the fledgling U.S. Independent Soccer League. Spokane’s 12-game league schedule begins with a May 6 match against the Seattle Hammers.

Pelluer Invitational

Ten teams and nearly 400 athletes will make today’s Pelluer Invitational track meet at Eastern Washington University one of the biggest in the 23-year history of the meet.

Field events start at 1:30 p.m, with action on the Woodward Stadium track beginning at 4.

Teams from Washington State, EWU, Idaho, Whitworth, Gonzaga, Montana, Whitman, Community Colleges of Spokane, North Idaho College and Northwest Nazarene are expected.

Pac-10 golf

WSU’s Mandy Patterson shot a final-round 77 to finish 31st in the Women’s Pac-10 Golf Championship at Corvallis, Ore. Patterson finished the competition with a three-round total of 234.

Arizona State’s Wendy Ward won the tournament with a total of 211. Ward’s effort helped the Sun Devils capture the Pac-10 title for the third year in a row.

Idaho football scrimmage

Idaho’s annual Silver and Gold Scrimmage will take place Friday night at 7 at the Kibbie Dome. The game will be the final practice for the Vandals until they return for fall practices in August. Admission is free.
