Twiss Becomes Queen For A Day

Chuck Stewart Correspondent

Julie Twiss is on a roll.

The Spokane bowler captured her third straight major area title of the season last weekend when she won the Washington State Queens tournament in Bremerton.

Last month she captured the A scratch all-events and singles championships in the city women’s tournament, and earlier the local Queens qualifier at Deer Park.

“She’s really bowling well,” said friend and fellow bowler Julie Heath.

Besides a monetary prize, Twiss won a tiara, silver platter and entry into either the 1996 or 1997 national Queens tournament. She opted for the ‘97 event, in Reno, Nev.

Twiss, who averaged 218 for 15 games in the Bremerton event, said, “I felt I was really bowling well. I had a lot of confidence.

“I felt I had a good shot, and looked around to see why everyone else didn’t have this shot. ‘This is fun,’ I told myself.”

But the moment got to her.

“I really had loose legs that last game from the excitement,” she said. “The adrenaline was really going and I dang near lost my legs.”

It turned out her 71 rivals, including most of the top women’s scratch bowlers in the state, didn’t have a leg to stand on. Twiss averaged 213 for the first six qualifying games, then pounded out an 873 four-game block after the field was pared to 36.

When the top 16 squared off in double-elimination competition, Twiss went unbeaten in five matches, averaging 218. She beat Donna Jameson of Everett 215-204 for the title.

Twiss will pass on the 1995 national Queens tournament in two weeks in Tucson, Ariz., but Heath and Kathy Thomas of Spokane will be in the event.

That same weekend, Twiss will join Heath, Thomas, Sandy Hanson and Kim Sternod in the Women’s International Bowling Congress Nationals in Tucson.

The men’s Spokane Bowling Association is looking for a new executive director.

Publicist Steve Toland said Terry Friberg announced he would not run for a second term. Interested applicants should send their resume to the SBA, P.O. Box 4328, Spokane 99202 by May 14.

Tom Dowling moved up from first vice president to replace Ray Edwards as president of the SBA, and the other vice presidents moved up a spot - Steve Blake, Dave Loft and Len Lutsey - with Elzya Jordan coming on as fourth vice president.

Jim Atkins of Post Falls has the lead in Division 3 scratch (1,840) and handicap (2,308) all-events, and with partner Kelly Hart leads the scratch doubles (1,141) in the 48th Idaho State Men’s Tournament in Boise.

Coeur d’Alene’s Specialty Insulation (David Hart, Atkins, Jim Ferrians, Steve Shaffer and Alan Gessner) leads the Division 2 handicap team event with a 3,522.

Track and field

Spokane’s running nun, Sister Madonna Buder, will compete in the St. Louis Senior Olympics on May 28-31. She is 65 and a distance specialist.
