Mead Fattens Gsl Lead With Win Over Rogers

Prep softball/baseball

The heck with putting students in the new Mead high school. That building, slated for completion in the late ‘90s, should just be a massive warehouse with the sole purpose of storing league titles and state championships for the current Mead High.

Friday night in front of a crowd of 200 at Franklin Park, the Panthers softball team took a big step in securing this year’s Greater Spokane League title. Mead beat Rogers 5-3.

In other GSL softball games, University beat Gonzaga Prep 13-0, Shadle Park beat Lewis and Clark 8-6 and North Central beat Central Valley 4-0.

At Franklin Park, Rogers (9-3) moved out to a 3-0 lead after two innings before Mead (12-1) rallied to tie the score at 3-3 after five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mead second baseman Kelly Kinder hit a two-out two-run homer off Rogers pitcher Traci Moore.

“I don’t think about anything when I step up to bat,” Kinder said. “I strike out when I think.”

Kinder finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate.

Kinder batted left-handed last year but moved to the right side of the plate this season. “I’ve got my confidence back this season and I’m having fun.”

At G-Prep, the Titans (10-3) got a 3-for-3 outing at the plate from Devon Bakken to beat the Bullpups (4-8).

At Hart Field, the Shadle Park Highlanders (4-9) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning against the Tigers (1-11) with two outs to take the lead for good.

And at North Central, Shawna Kristian hit a three-run homer for the Indians (7-4) in the first inning as NC cruised past Central Valley (7-6).

Frontier softball

At West Valley, the Eagles swept Cheney 1-0 and 9-1. In the first game, WV (9-0) pitcher Carie Koker scored the game’s only run on a fielding error. She threw a two-hitter against the Blackhawks (4-4) to improve her record to (3-0).

In the second game, the Eagles got RBI triples from Colleen Lawler and pitcher Darcy Sohns. Sohns pitched a three-hitter, struck out 12 and made her record 5-0.

GSL baseball

The race for first place remained in limbo following Friday’s GSL baseball games.

University and Shadle Park are tied for first at 9-4 while Rogers is a half-game back in second at 8-4. Central Valley is a game back in third at 8-5 and Gonzaga Prep dropped to fourth at 7-5.

At Hart Field, the Highlanders tallied four runs in the third and sixth innings to beat Lewis and Clark 9-4.

Joe Dunsmoor had three hits and three RBIs for Shadle.

At G-Prep, University came back from a 3-0 deficit behind Scott Asan’s grand slam in the fourth inning to beat the Bullpups 8-7.

G-Prep had a chance to tie in the seventh, but Brian Herrin was thrown out at home plate after a passed ball.

At Mead, Rogers scored nine runs in the second inning en route to a 10-9 win over the Panthers (5-8).

Mike Knight, Jeremy Bailey and Cory Smiley finished with two hits each for Rogers.

At NC, the Bears scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the 14-12 win over the Indians (3-8).

NC’s Steve Sebesta went 4 for 5 with four RBIs, two doubles, a triple and a home run.
